The Umbrella Academy

Congratulations, you’ve officially made it more than halfway through the month! To celebrate this tremendous achievement, you deserve to kick back and relax with the best the streaming world has to offer, and boy, is it offering a lot this holiday weekend (thanks, presidents!). Over the next three days, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO are releasing so many amazing movies and shows that it’s difficult to know where to start. Should you check out The Umbrella Academy or Lorena? Deadpool 2 or The Party? The options are truly endless.

This weekend, Netflix is debuting five new Originals, including highly-anticipated series The Umbrella Academy, The Dragon Prince Season 2, and raunchy comedy The Breaker Upperers. Check back on Saturday for one of the all-time greatest comedies, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, as well as critically-acclaimed doc Studio 54. Not in the mood for comedy? Don’t miss Lorena, a Prime Video docu-series about the infamous case of penis-chopping tabloid sensation Lorena Bobbitt.

Did The Umbrella Academy get you in the superhero mood? HBO’s Saturday night movie is Deadpool 2, the sequel to Ryan Reynolds’ irreverent superhero flick for people who hate Marvel movies. No matter your interest — Marvel or otherwise — you’re sure to find something great to stream this weekend, so don’t sweat it.

The Umbrella Academy

Another week, another new series about superheroes. This week’s addition is The Umbrella Academy, a Netflix drama about a ragtag group of ultra-powerful people who unite to avert a global apocalypse. Based on a popular graphic novel series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, Netflix’s adaptation stars Ellen Page, Aidan Gallagher, and Mindhunter‘s Cameron Britton (among others) in a dark and kooky take on the typical superhero story. And keep your eyes peeled for Kate Walsh, who takes on a role that couldn’t be more different than her 13 Reasons Why and Private Practice roots.

Lorena

This four-part docu-series from Jordan Peele traces the notorious trial of Lorena Bobbitt, who became a tabloid sensation after she chopped off her husband’s penis in the 1990s. Through in-depth interviews with Bobbitt and those close to the case, Lorena offers a fresh perspective on a story that captivated Americans and laid the groundwork for the modern 24-hour news cycle. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, the docu-series provides an important opportunity to discuss issues of domestic and sexual assault, which were virtually ignored at the time due to the headline-grabbing nature of the case.

Deadpool 2

Deadpool is back, baby. In Deadpool 2, David Leitch’s follow-up to the 2016 hit, the titular mercenary (Ryan Reynolds) find himself wracked with grief after the death of his girlfriend, Vanessa. In order to avenge her death, Reynolds joins the X-Men, and he forms a band of superheroes known as the X-Force to save a young mutant from evil villain Cable (Josh Brolin). Like its predecessor, Deadpool 2 approaches this challenge with contempt, disinterest, and a healthy amount of horniness, all of which end up helping the unconventional hero in the long run (okay, maybe not the horniness).
