‘The Dragon Prince’ Season 2 Is Now on Netflix

The Dragon Prince is back on Netflix, and this season things are getting heated. If you’re looking for an exciting action epic to binge-watch this weekend, look no further than this crazy computer-animated series from the former head writer of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Created by Aaron Ehasz (Avatar) and Justin Richmond, The Dragon Prince tells yet another epic hero’s journey tale, but with a bit of a twist. Set in a fantasy world, the series takes place in a land divided between the elves, who are sworn to protect dragons, and the humans, who needlessly destroyed the last dragon’s egg. Or at least that’s what everyone thought. In reality, the last dragon egg fell into the hands of the young prince Ezran (Sasha Rojen). Together with his older half-brother Callum (Jack De Sena) and their former enemy Rayla (Paula Burrows), an elf assassin who begrudgingly came to their side, they protect the egg and try to bring peace to the world.

That was the crux of Season 1, which ended with a pretty huge cliffhanger. After toting the egg everywhere imaginable in a quest to keep it safe, last season ended with the dragon egg finally hatching. Will this new baby be enough to heal a decades-old wound between these two dueling civilizations?

Ehasz’s latest series shares a lot of its DNA with Avatar. Like the beloved Nickelodeon show, the complicated task of navigating political strife falls on the shoulders of three young children who are in over their heads. Cool action scenes between trained warriors are routinely balanced between silly day-in-the-life jokes. But what sets The Dragon Prince apart is its focus. Avatar was always a story about a young man who rejected his destiny and now has to redeem himself. The Dragon Prince follows an older brother who rejects his believed destiny to make way for his sibling. It’s a story of complicated and at times begrudging self-sacrifice in the middle of a magic-fueled war.

Dark and broody crime dramas and cynical comedies are great and all, but sometimes what you really want is a series that will take your hand and promise you there is hope. That’s what The Dragon Prince does. And with a very manageable nine-episode second season, this is the perfect binge watch if you just have a few hours to spare.
