Is ‘Vampire Diaries’ Leaving Netflix?

Fans of sexy vampire bros Damon and Stefan Salvatore have been losing their minds over the past few days due to the news that The Vampire Diaries is rumored to be leaving Netflix. This pivoted off some idle remarks made about the new WarnerMedia streaming service at this winter’s Television Critics Association tour about how the studio might want to snag back some content for the service, which should debut later this year.

So what’s going on, folks? Is Vampire Diaries leaving Netflix? Can you watch Vampire Diaries on Hulu? Why is Netflix getting rid of Vampire Diaries? What is happening???

Well, take a deep breath, and calm down. If you live in the United States, or most countries Netflix services, you have nothing to worry about. All eight seasons of Vampire Diaries will remain on Netflix for the time being, as will the five seasons of spinoff The Originals, and presumably Legacies once that finishes its first season in a few short weeks. A simple perusing of our What’s Leaving Netflix in March list will let you know that, if you’re in America, you have nothing to vamp out about.

And by the way, if you’re wondering if Vampire Diaries is on Hulu? The answer is, no, it’s on Netflix. Sorry, Hulu fans.

In fact, other than people who only subscribe to Hulu, there’s only one region dealing with this awful turn of events: Australia and New Zealand. As noted in a Facebook post from February 20, Vampire Diaries is leaving Netflix on March 1, but only down under.

“Sadly we must say farewell to the Vampire Diaries on March 1st,” Netflix Australia/New Zealand’s Facebook said. “If you’ve got a spare 5 days, 2 hours and 33 minutes, give it one last complete binge before it’s gone.”

We recommend spending the time bingeing regardless of your location, but in case you are from either Australia or New Zealand, you might be wondering why The Vampire Diaries is leaving. In a follow-up post, the Australia/New Zealand Netflix account said, “Let’s talk about licensing for a second. When we acquire the licenses for shows or movies, they’re not ours forever. Sometimes we’re able to renew stuff, but occasionally we don’t get the option. We hate losing shows just as much as you do, but it just comes with the territory.”

That territory, in this case, being Australia and New Zealand. For the rest of the world, for the moment, sweet, sweet Delena is safe to love another day.
