‘Green Book’ Wins the Best Picture Oscar

Green Book has won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Picture. The win capped off a wild night without a host, with plenty of musical events, and more than a few surprises. (Hello, Best Actress win for The Favourite‘s Olivia Colman!)

2019 was unique insomuch that it was a wide open race for Best Picture. A Star is Born was once thought to be a sure thing, but after the Golden Globe successes of Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book, the race became more muddled. The awards presented throughout the night didn’t help prognosticators figure it out, either. Black Panther won a number of technical awards, Bohemian Rhapsody took home other technical honors and the Best Actor award for Rami Malek, and Roma took home three honors, including Best Director. Elsewhere, the screenplay awards were split between Green Book and BlackKklansman.

Julia Roberts had the honor of presenting the award, and in his speech, Green Book director Peter Farrelly said that everything “was done with love.” He also shouted out star Viggo Mortensen for being the spark of the film. Earlier in the night, Green Book star Mahershala Ali won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and Green Book‘s writers won the award for Best Original Screenplay.
