Who Is Justin on Netflix’s ‘Dating Around’?

Netflix’s latest reality show sensation is Dating Around, the streaming service’s first foray into the dating show sub-genre. While it’s not as irreverent as Nailed It! or as peaceful as Tidying Up, the show fits in with Netflix’s unique take on reality formats. This dating show is patient with a cinematic flair that makes the kind of basic small talk you do on first dates way more riveting than you’d expect. The dates generally go well, with some going better than others but none really crashing in flames–except for Gurki and Justin.

Episode 2 follows an independent jewelry buyer named Gurki as she goes on five blind dates with five guys all at the same restaurant/bar (across different nights–this isn’t a Mrs. Doubtfire-style five-places-at-once thing). One of those guys is Justin, a guy who works in real estate, loves Miller High Life, hates cats, and dreams of rocking the stage (even though he can’t play guitar). Everything seems to be going along just fine as the small talk unfolds… and then the topic of marriage comes up.

Gurki talks about how her parents, who are from North India, had an arranged marriage. She then explains how that affected her first marriage, which was to a man she knew wasn’t the one but felt a whole lot of cultural pressure to get hitched. As she tells Justin, her parents made it work with their arranged marriage, so she could make it work with this guy she actually chose to be with.

This all makes sense to the other guys in the episode. One even commends her for coming out and saying that what she did to her ex-husband was wrong. But Justin can’t let it go. When they get to the final location of the night, a maybe tipsy Justin brings up Gurki’s divorce again and her marrying a guy she knew wasn’t the one. He doesn’t hold back: “How would anyone ever trust you?” Just putting this out there: that’s one sentence you never want to say on a first date. Gurki tries once again to explain to Justin that he doesn’t actually know what it feels like to come from her culture, and he accuses her of being defensive. He then gives up and leaves, and Gurki’s glad to see him go.

This one’s a bit of a mystery, if only because his Instagram is private. Yep, Justin from Dating Around is on Instagram, but you’re not going to get an update on what he’s up to there. Whether or not his Insta was private before Dating Around dropped, who knows! It’s rumored that Netflix is planning an update on Season 1, so maybe we’ll find out more about Justin there. Or y’know, maybe he’s already had enough. If this episode was my 15 minutes of fame, I’d probably chuck that stopwatch in the Hudson.
