Everything You Need to Know about DC Universe

There are so many streaming services out there fighting for your attention, it can be hard to keep them all straight. There are the big three (Netflix, Amazon’s Prime Video, and Hulu) as well as niche platforms catering to everyone from horror fans (Shudder) to anglophiles (Acorn, Britbox). If you’re a superhero fan, though, there’s one streaming service that should really win your attention: DC Universe.

The streaming service provides pretty much everything casual and die-hard DC fans would want, from TV shows and animated movies to a comics library and original content. With the platform’s second live-action series Doom Patrol now airing, your curiosity about this new streaming service may be piqued. If you’ve got questions about DC Universe, then we’ve got answers!

What is DC Universe?

DC Universe is a streaming service specifically crafted for fans of DC Comics and their superheroes. Launched in September 2018, DC Universe gives subscribers access to movies, comics, and TV shows all in the same interface. That means you can read the stories that inspired many of the movies and TV shows that you can also stream on DC Universe.

How much does DC Universe cost?

You can sign up for a free 7-day trial at first. After that, you can choose between one of two plans: a $7.99 monthly subscription or an annual $74.99 one. Tip: going with the annual subscription will save you $20.

What shows does DC Universe include?

Oh wow, what doesn’t it include?! Seriously, if you love movies and TV shows based on DC characters, you’ll find plenty to watch on this app. Live-action shows include:

  • Superman serials (1948)
  • The Adventures of Superman (1952-1958)

Also the 1960s Batman live-action series, starring Adam West and Burt Ward, is not included, most likely because that show’s rights are legendarily tangled.

  • Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2008-2011)

  • Green Lantern: The Animated Series (2012-2013)

There are also a number of original series that have debuted exclusively on DC Universe since it launched: Titans, Young Justice: Outsiders, and Doom Patrol. More live-action series, like Swamp Thing and Stargirl, are on the way later this year.

What else is on DC Universe?

There are thousands of DC comics that rotate in and out of the digital library, including classics stretching back to the birth of the DC Universe 80 years ago to more modern stories. There are also forums, polls, lists, documentaries, an encyclopedia, and news shows to keep you informed on all things DC.

What is Titans?

DC Universe’s first live-action series, Titans, debuted in October 2018 and wrapped up its 11 episode Season 1 in December. The series stars Brenton Thwaites as Robin (Dick Grayson), Batman’s sidekick that strikes out on his own, forming a team of young heroes. Anna Diop co-stars as Starfire, Teagan Croft plays Raven, and Ryan Potter plays Beast Boy. The series, which is incredibly violent and uses its fair share of swears, also featured Minka Kelly as the superhero Dove and was used to introduce viewers to the stars of another DC Universe original, Doom Patrol. You can stream all of Titans Season 1 on DC Universe right now. Season 2 has been ordered.

What is Doom Patrol?

DC Universe’s second major live-action series is Doom Patrol. It debuted on February 15 and focuses on an offbeat group of misfits that are more survivors of their own weirdo powers than actual superheroes. The series stars Brendan Fraser as Robotman, Matt Bomer as Negative Man, and Alan Tudyk as Mr. Nobody. Timothy Dalton also recurs as the group’s eccentric leader, The Chief. This series drops new episodes every week, meaning Season 1 won’t be wrapped up until May.

What is Young Justice: Outsiders?

DC Universe also excited fans by continuing a canceled fan favorite animated series. Season 3 of Young Justice, subtitled Outsiders, picks up where the previous series left off. The show follows a team of young heroes, including Nightwing, Superboy, Tigress, Black Lightning, Cyborg, and more. The first half of the season (13 episodes) has already aired, and the second half will drop in June 2019.
