We already knew that Game of Thrones Season 8 was going to be giving us a super-sized episode centered on “The Battle of Winterfell,” but a new report from EW.com suggests that many of our favorite heroes won’t make it out alive.
The article, written by James Hibberd, opens with a funny anecdote about a police helicopter flying over the set during a “ridiculously sensitive scene” where “beloved heroes lay dead outside the castle gates.” Luckily, the cops didn’t spoil who died, but the EW.com report definitely confirms some of our favorites will die during the epic “Battle of Winterfell” episode, which is supposed to be Episode 3. So who won’t make it to the final three episodes?
Well, we do have some clues. EW.com confirms in addition to Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), and the rest of House Stark, we can expect Ser Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen), The Hound (Rory McCann), Samwell Tarly (John Bradley), and Ser Davos (Liam Cunningham) to join in on the fight. Though he’s not mentioned in the piece, we would also guess that Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) makes an appearance since we last saw him riding North to join the cause. Also, the shoot marks Arya Stark’s very first official Game of Thrones battle. “I skip the battle every year, which is bizarre since Arya’s the one who’s been training the most,” Maisie Williams says in the piece. “This is my first taste of it. And I’ve been thrown in at the deep end.”

The article also claims that the Battle of Winterfell will be the longest extended battle sequence in film or TV history, which means it will be longer than the 40-minute-long Helm’s Deep sequence from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Sophie Turner also teases that the episode is 90 minutes long, making the episode movie-length. The battle sequence was shot over 11 weeks of grueling night shoots, confirming that the Night King’s army will lay siege to Winterfell during the actual night. (So maybe Arya’s ability to fight in the pitch dark will come in handy again!)
“The hard work pays off on this show,” Williams told EW.com. “After one of those really tough days, you know it’s going to be part of something so iconic and it will look amazing.”
