‘Secret City: Under the Eagle’: Anna Torv’s Creepy Conspiracy Thriller is Finally Back

Last summer, the creepy conspiracy thriller Secret City became a sleeper Netflix hit. The Australian drama starred Mindhunter‘s Anna Torv and Academy Award-nominated actress Jacki Weaver as a dueling journalist and politician. At the end of Secret City Season 1, it seems that Weaver’s Caitriona Bailey has won, but a deadly new conspiracy puts Torv’s Harriet Dunkley back in the fight in Season 2.

Secret City is an explosive political series based on a series of books by Chris Uhlmann and Steve Lewis. While the first season follows those novels rather closely, Season 2, “Under the Eagle,” is an original story that mixes cyber terrorism, assassination plots, and government secrets to a chilling effect.

Secret City: Under the Eagle starts after Harriet Dunkley is finished serving her time in prison. Demoralized, but not beaten, Harriet is trying to piece together some semblance of a life with the help of her old cellmate Mina Al Masi (Louisa Mignone). After Harriet successfully defends herself against Caitriona in a tetchy live news broadcast, she comes to the attention of a struggling MP named Karen Koutoufides (Danielle Cormack). Koutoufides recruits Harriet to join her staff as Senior Media advisor, putting our heroine right back in the crosshairs of Australian national politics.

However, things take a dark turn when Harriet is contacted by a mysterious online group claiming to have proof that a recent gas explosion is actually the fault of Caitriona Bailey’s government, and that they are covering up a dangerous secret. When Mina learns that Bailey is responsible for the deaths of her family, she threatens to put herself in the fight, thus complicating the situation for Harriet to a dangerous and deadly degree.

Secret City: Under the Eagle just hit Netflix today and you can stream both seasons back-to-back. No word yet if there will be a third season.
