New Movies on Demand: ‘Aquaman,’ ‘Vox Lux,’ ‘The Favourite,’ and More

TGIF, amirite? The weekend is here and you’ve got a whole lot of sweet, sweet time off coming your way. I’m not here to tell you how to spend your time. You want to go see Captain Marvel every single day you have free? Go for it. Is that what I plan on doing? I’m not ruling it out! But while you’re not cheering for superheroes on the big screen, you can cheer for them and all kinds of characters on the small screen. Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover.

If you’ve been waiting to check out Olivia Colman’s Oscar-winning performance in The Favourite, now is your chance. The dark period piece dramedy is now available to rent and will surely provide some real cheeky mischief to your weekend (not the kind that can get you in trouble, to clarify). Also available to rent is the follow-up to the acclaimed boxing film Creed. Michael B. Jordan returns as the son of Apollo Creed in Creed II, and this time he’s taking on the Drago boxing dynasty.

What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of titles below, including a tubular superhero movie, a political documentary, a pop music drama, and more–now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

Aquaman

The DC movie-verse expanded significantly this past holiday season with the release of the blockbuster Aquaman. The film became a major hit, a big enough hit to turn Aquaman from a pop culture punchline into a major box office draw. That’s what you get when you cast the charismatic Jason Momoa as your lead! This action adventure romp is unlike any superhero movie you’ve ever seen before, in that it primarily takes place underwater. If you’ve been waiting for a superhero movie to have an octopus playing the drums, then get on board because Aquaman is for you! You’ll be able to rent Aquaman on March 19.

Vox Lux

Natalie Portman plays a wildly successful pop star in this drama about one woman’s struggle to balance her career and raising a teenage daughter. But pop star Celeste’s career is marked by tragedy: it started after she recorded a song about a school shooting she survived as a teen and, as unfolds in Vox Lux, is overshadowed by another act of violence in the present. This buzzy drama premiered at the Venice International Film Festival but didn’t really make much of an impact at the box office. If the trailer entices you, you’ll be happy to know you can rent the movie right now!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze

Follow up your repeat viewings of Captain Marvel by revisiting this total gem of a ’90s comic book movie. The 1991 sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is nowhere near as dark as the original (yeah, I said dark!), but it’s possibly twice as much fun. Come on, can you think of another superhero movie that has giant dandelions, a Vanilla Ice dance break, and the main villain shouting “They’re… BABIEEEES?!” TMNT II has everything you’re looking for in a wacky Saturday night rental–and you can rent it in iTunes for just $0.99!
