Netflix’s new Turkish vampire show Immortals is like an Evanescence album cover brought to life. It’s all tattoos, leather, night clubs, and angst. The series follows Mia (Elçin Sangu), a “good” vampire who was turned against her will by bad boy vampire Dmitry (Kerem Bürsin) back in the 1800s. Now she’s tracked her maker to Istanbul where she has designs on revenge. There are vampires with crazy dye jobs, vaping vampire hunters, and over-the-top mysteries. It’s not good, but it is a hoot.

It’s also full of sexy vampires, the only vampires that seem to matter anymore. Forget your Nosferatus and horrible ghouls who prey on you in the dark. Immortals digs deep into the “sexy vampire trope” celebrated by the likes of Bela Legosi and Twilight. However, you might be wondering, how sexy are the vampires in Immortals? How do they compare with the vamps of yore? And does it make sense that vampires would like having fast, rough sex against stacks of comically empty boxes? (No, really, those boxes just fall down like there’s nothing in them.)

Sorry, I digressed there. Those boxes bother me.

So here’s the deal with the vampires in Immortals: they’re pretty sexy. In fact, I would say that their sex appeal is about all they have going for them. So much so that one of the earliest conversations in the show is just Karmen (Selma Ergeç) telling Mia that she’s like, really, really pretty. They’re planning a complex revenge plot, but someone has to remind Mia that she is a looker.

Of course, Immortals‘ vampires are a specific kind of sexy: the brooding, tattooed, Hot Topic, pleather-wearing variety. It’s a trend that went out of vogue during a house party in the mid ’90s, but it still seems to be cool in Turkey. The vibe blankets everything in the show, almost to an irksome degree. The vampire hunter characters, who should be everything their enemy isn’t, also are into the same clubbing aesthetic that Dmitry, Mia, and their friends espouse. They’re covered in tattoos, have sex under neon lights, and are basically always either partying or plotting a sting on some undead assholes.

The only character who seems to veer away from this glossy trash goth aesthetic is a reluctant vampire named Numel (Birkan Sokullu). He has a more 2019 look, down to his hipster beard and everyday lifestyle. And I like this because I can actually tell him apart from the other characters. When everyone is tattooed and having sex and grumbling about the undead, it’s hard to tell who’s who!

Immortals isn’t a great vampire show by any means, but it is a delectable parade of hot bodies and pretty faces. Tawdry, pulpy, and without depth, it’s one of those shows that’s perfect for when you just want to unwind and watch some vampires have rough sex against a pile of empty boxes.
