Where Is Elizabeth Holmes Now? What The Theranos CEO Is Up To

HBO‘s newest documentary film, The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, focuses on one of the most outrageous scammers of our age: Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. For years, Holmes was heralded as the second-coming of Steve Jobs. She was a flaxen haired genius with an oddly deep voice set on saving the world by revolutionizing blood testing. Apple alums, tech billionaires, and even Henry Kissinger all contributed to her cause. However, it was soon revealed that her technology was a con, and Theranos was putting lives at risk with its shoddy inventions and useless tests.

The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley is acclaimed director Alex Gibney’s look at the Elizabeth Holmes saga, and it debuted last night on HBO. Gibney brings to vivid life the horror of the fiasco. He builds off of the whistle-blowing reporting of John Carryou’s Bad Blood to tell a story that helps you visualize just how Holmes scammed the tech’s elite and how irresponsible her choices were. (There’s one sequence where you see inside the faulty Edison machines and realize how dangerous they are — with broken glass, sharp needles, and tainted blood samples — that’s positively chilling.)

So The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley does a great job of tracing the history of Elizabeth Holmes, but where is she now?

Where is Elizabeth Holmes Now?

Is she rotting behind bars? Disgraced beyond belief? Hiding from the light of the sun?

Nope, she is doing just fine.

Well, she’s doing relatively fine. The photo above was taken in January of this year, when she arrived, all smiles, to a hearing for her upcoming trial. Both she and former partner Sunny Balwani have plead not guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud. So far, no trial date has been set, and Holmes and Balwani have both been released on $500,000 bail. Holmes could face up to 20 years in prison, but maintains her innocence.

While Holmes has lost her super duper nice Los Altos home, Vanity Fair reports that she is currently living in a luxury apartment in San Francisco. She and Balwani are no longer romantically involved, and she is engaged to a hospitality heir 8 years her junior (according to the ABC podcast The Dropout). Instagram posts of the two happily hanging at Burning Man and wrapped up in lovey-dovey embraces have begun to circulate on social media. Her dog Balto, named after the famous sled dog, also appears.

Holmes shows no signs of giving up, and with The Inventor, The Dropout, and Adam McKay/Jennifer Lawrence’s upcoming film project about her, she shows no sign of losing relevance. ABC News even reports that Holmes is pursuing funding for a new start up project in Silicon Valley, seemingly unfazed by her impending trial.

The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley is now streaming on HBO.
