New Movies on Demand: ‘Bumblebee,’ ‘The Mule,’ ‘Mary Poppins Returns,’ and More

Spring may have sprung, but odds are it’s still just a liiiiittle too nippy out there to do any of your fave spring activities (put that picnic basket back in your closet). Looks like you’ve got at least one more weekend of inside fun ahead of you, and what’s wrong with that? After all, inside is where all the movies live on VOD! Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover.

This is a big weekend to catch up on holiday movies that you’ve been waiting weeks to rent. First up on the “to rent” list is Mary Poppins Returns, the long-awaited sequel to the beloved Disney classic. You can now bring singin’ and dancin’ Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda home for a fraction of the film’s purchase price! Make Saturday night a delightful family-friendly double feature by renting Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the Oscar-winning superhero movie that introduces a new generation to Spidey’s sprawling mythos. Miles Morales and Mary Poppins? Sounds like a great team-up to me!

What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of retro action movies, gritty dramas, and animated romps now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

Bumblebee

The long-running Transformers movie saga took a sharp left turn for this prequel focusing on beloved Autobot Bumblebee. Set in 1987, Bumblebee not only stars Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena as the robot hero’s first Earthly pals, it also brings all of the franchise’s iconic ’80s designs to life for the first time on the big screen. Well, in live-action. As if I could ever forget the original animated Transformers film! Get ready to have Stan Bush’s “The Touch” stuck in your head all weekend long. You’ll be able to rent Bumblebee on April 2.

The Mule

The Mule prominently features an automobile, but it’s about as far from Bumblebee as a movie can travel. This gritty crime drama stars Clint Eastwood as an 80-year-old Korean War veteran that’s so strapped for cash he decides to become a drug mule for a dangerous Mexican drug cartel. Eastwood also produced and directed the film, making it the second movie he released in 2018 (the first being the biopic The 15:17 to Paris). If you want to wait and rent The Mule, you’ll be waiting until April 2.

Letters from Iwo Jima

If you want to watch some Clint Eastwood this weekend and don’t want to wait to pay full price for The Mule, you’ll be glad to know that you can currently rent the director’s 2006 WWII drama Letters from Iwo Jima for just under a dollar on iTunes. The film is a companion piece to Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers, both of which document the Battle of Iwo Jima but from two opposite sides. Letters from Iwo Jima is notable for being almost entirely in Japanese, and for winning the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing. It earned a bunch more nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
