‘Jeopardy’ Reportedly Searching for Alex Trebek’s Replacement

Is Jeopardy searching for host Alex Trebek‘s replacement? According to Rob Shuter, host of RadarOnline’s Straight Shuter: Naughty But Nice gossip podcast, the longtime game show has begun looking for a new host to succeed Trebek when his contract expires in three years. Sources tell Shuter and RadarOnline that Jeopardy “was already talking about a replacement host when [Trebek] retired,” but now that he’s battling Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, the process has been “accelerated.”

Jeopardy is searching to replace Alex Trebek,” Shuter said in a new episode of Straight Shuter. “Alex has just three years left on his contract with Jeopardy, and he recently disclosed that he was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, so now, the show is looking for a new host.” Shuter explained that the decision is “not necessarily because of his health issues,” but because of Trebek’s existing plans to exit the game show when his contract expires. According to Shuter’s sources, the 78-year-old Trebek “made it quite clear when his contract ended in just three years, it was time for him to retire.”

Noting that Trebek will be 81 years old when his contract retires, Shuter went on to say that “there’s no shame” in retiring. “So, he gets to 81, and the show is now looking for a replacement when he retires,” said the host. “Although, it has to be said that his health scare has probably accelerated that process just a little bit.” He continued, “The show — it’s still really successful. It makes millions and millions for the network. There is no way it was going to end when the host retired.”

Shuter’s sources said that producers hope to “refresh the format of the show, not change it” by adding a new host. “They’re talking about his replacement, and it’s always centered around a female host, maybe even someone of color,” said Shuter. Sources revealed that Jeopardy is looking for “someone smart and well-educated” as well as “respected and trustworthy” that viewers will identify with. “They are aiming more for Gayle King than Real Housewife Nene Leakes!” a source told RadarOnline.
