‘Unicorn Store’ Has More Marvel Connections Than Just Captain Marvel and Nick Fury

Look, I know what was going through your mind when you saw Unicorn Store, a charming new indie comedy film, on your Netflix page: “OMG, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson! They were just in a little Marvel film called Captain Marvel, as Captain Marvel and Nick Fury!”

I also know what was going through your mind when Karan Soni showed up on screen as an over-eager youth camp counselor: “OMG, that’s Dopinder, the hilarious cab driver from Deadpool and Deadpool 2! There are so many Marvel connections in Unicorn Store!” But I’m about to blow your mind with the connection you probably missed: Hamish Linklater.

The Unicorn Store plot is this: Larson (who also directed) is a struggling, immature artist named Kit, forced to move back home with her parents. One day, Kit decides to get off her couch and get a temp job at a public relations firm. There she meets Gary (Linklater), the vice president of the company, who immediately starts hitting on her. Kit, who still loves care bears and unicorns, is too naive to notice, and thinks he’s trying to promote her.

It’s a sleazy role that Linklater makes the most of with perfect, deadpan delivery—so much so that I actually didn’t realize he was supposed to be a creep at first. I just thought he was a funny weirdo, like everyone else in the film. Though I probably should have realized Gary’s intentions when he introduced himself to Kit, and then immediately advised her not to Google him.

Alright, you’re saying, but what does any of this have to do with Marvel? Well friends, Linklater—who you may also know as the brother from the sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine—was actually in both a Marvel film and a Marvel TV show.

The first is the 2005 Fantastic Four film—you know, the one where Captain America played the Human Torch. Linklater appeared in that film as, drumroll please…

Alright, so it wasn’t very big role, but for those who don’t remember, Leonard Kirk is the right-hand man of Victor von Doom, a.k.a. Doctor Doom, aka the Big Bad of Fantastic Four.

The second, and perhaps more significant Marvel connection is Linklater’s recurring current role in the FX/Marvel series Legion, where he plays, another drumroll please…

CLARK DEBUSSEY!

Clark DeBussy is an agent of the (initially) oppressive government agency known as Division 3. It was a small, guest role for Linklater in Season 1 of Legion, but he joined the main cast in Seasons 2 and 3, and now has scary scars on his face thanks to a horrific explosion.

So… I guess we could say that Unicorn Store is an alternate universe in which Carol Danvers is an immature struggling artist, Nick Fury is a bubbly unicorn salesman, Clark DeBussy is the creepy VP of a PR company and Dopinder is, well, essentially the same person, but now he works at a camp. It’s a weird superhero team-up, sure, but all I’m saying is: Unicorn Store is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, confirmed! (Okay, not really)
