Becky Lynch Captures Gold, But WrestleMania 35 Main Event Ends in Controversy

After seven and a half hours of action, WrestleMania 35 is finally in the books. Probably. No Way Jose and Kane may very well still be at MetLife Stadium squaring off in a TLC match for a WWE Network exclusive. Despite the bloated runtime, WWE’s marquee event didn’t disappoint.

WrestleMania 35 delivered a slew of feel-good moments as fan-favorite Kofi Kingston captured his first world championship, Seth Rollins slayed “The Beast” (Brock Lesnar) to regain the WWE Universal Championship, and in perhaps the most surprising upset of the evening, The IIconics (Billie Kay and Peyton Royce) left the Fatal four-way tag match with the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.

The buzziest moment of the night, however, belonged to “The Man” Becky Lynch.

Lynch, Ronda Rousey, and Charlotte Flair made history last night as the trio became the first women to main event WrestleMania. Becky’s surge of popularity began at SummerSlam when the “Irish Lass Kicker” slapped Flair after their title match, setting off a chain of events that resulted in a groundswell of support for the perpetually underutilized star. Becky’s connection with the WWE Universe would not be denied as many hoped WrestleMania would conclude with Lynch vanquishing her foes to capture both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships in the “winner takes all” main event. And that’s exactly what happened.

Fans celebrated after Lynch countered a Piper’s Pit from Rousey into a surprise rollup, earning the 1, 2, 3 over the high-profile star. The Man became “Becky Two Belts.” Fans were jubilant about the result of the match, but the abrupt nature of the finish and the fact that Rousey’s shoulders didn’t appear to be down for a full three count have led many to believe that the ending was botched.

Was this the planned conclusion? Was it botched? Professional wrestling is deliberately hazy, but many outlets are reporting that Lynch pinning Rousey wasn’t the scripted outcome of the match.

Pro Wrestling Torch’s Tom Colohue reported that the bout was supposed to end with Lynch tapping out Charlotte Flair.

Since this is professional wrestling, we have to take everything we hear with a grain of salt. The WWE has a knack for turning real-life controversy into storytelling gold. Even if the finish didn’t go as planned, the results speak for themselves: Becky Lynch, Kofi Kingston, and Seth Rollins left WrestleMania as champions.

The saga continues on tonight’s episode of Monday Night Raw.
