Step aside, The Walking Dead. Netflix is here with a gripping zombie thriller of its own, and the main question on fans’ minds is: will Black Summer get a second season?

Created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams, Black Summer is a spin-off of SYFY’s own zombie apocalypse thriller Z Nation. Set during the most dangerous and zombie-filled few weeks after the start of the outbreak, Black Summer is mostly composed of a series of vignettes, each of which follows a handful of survivors as they battle and sneak their way to their city’s checkpoint. Throughout these mini-stories the series also follows a young mother (Jaime King) who has been separated from her daughter and is desperate to get her back. Basically everyone has lost someone in this horror series, and they all have to deal with their trauma along with the unique hell that is running from a never-ending onslaught of super-powered zombies.

At eight episodes that run a little under five hours, Black Summer is a great and easy horror binge. But when can you expect more episodes?

Will There Be a Black Summer Season 2?

At the moment it’s unclear. Since Season 1 was released on April 11, it’s still too early for Netflix to make a renewal call. However, the social interest the series has generated certainly implies that a second season is possible. Stephen King tweeted his approval, for god’s sake!

Adding to that renewal argument is how Black Summer was pitched as a series. When Black Summer was first announced, it was said that it would be only loosely connected to its origin series, Z Nation. The relationship between Z Nation and Black Summer is similar to that of The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead; both are about zombies and exist in the same universe, but they don’t follow the same characters (at least, until recently). Since Fear the Walking Dead has been running for four seasons now, there’s precedent for a zombie spin-off series to continue on its own.

When Will Black Summer Season 2 Premiere?

If there is a second season, it’s probably going to take about a year before we see it. Black Summer was first announced in July of 2018 before premiering in April of 2019. Based on that roughly 10 month turnaround time and Black Summer‘s relatively short episodes, we can probably expect a possible second season to premiere on Netflix in spring of 2020, if one is green-lit.

What Could Happen in Black Summer Season 2?

Get ready for some zombie spoilers, folks. All of Black Summer‘s first season revolved around a single goal: getting to the stadium. The stadium was supposed to be a safety checkpoint, a symbol that help existed and it was on the way. Though Rose (Jaime King) ultimately reunites with her daughter at the stadium, she has to face a chilling reality: there’s no one at the safety point to save them.

Season 2 would most likely follow our survivors as they try to either find safety or create a new society in their now contaminated home. No matter what happens, there’s going to be a lot of black zom vomit, and it’s going to be epic.
