‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s Co-Creator Is Open to a Revival

Aqua Teen Hunger Force may have been canceled in 2015, but at least one of its creators is open to a revival. In an interview with Decider, Matt Maiellaro talked about Master Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad’s potential future.

“[Adult Swim] wanted to do a special a couple years ago and for whatever reason it didn’t work out, but it would be nice if they brought it back. It would be great. It was a good show, it was solid for the network. So all I can say is, it would be fun if it did come back,” Maiellaro said during an interview about Space Ghost Coast to Coast‘s legacy.

Originally launched as a spin-off to Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Maiellaro and Dave Willis’ surreal creation about anthropomorphic fast food roommates grew into an Adult Swim staple. The series officially premiered on the network in September of 2001. Fourteen years and 139 episodes later, the bizarre cult hit became the second longest running original series in Adult Swim history, only recently surpassed by The Venture Bros. It is also the only Adult Swim show to get its own box office film adaptation, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters.

However even network staples must eventually come to an end. In 2015 it was announced that Adult Swim was canceling the long-running series against the wishes of Maiellaro and Willis. The two creators reportedly learned about the abrupt ending of their series while they were in the middle of producing its 11th season. According to a statement made by Willis on Reddit, Adult Swim President Mike Lazzo was the one who made the decision to end it because “He was ready to move on from it.”

“It just kind of took off, unbeknownst to us for awhile,” Maiellaro said. “I remember being at the meeting with the entire network talking about the new material, and I remember the sales guy being like ‘How am I gonna sell a ball of meat?'”

“I miss doing it. It was a good show, it was fun,” Maiellaro added.
