Before you get too excited about the first of the month titles dropping next week, be sure to check out the dozens of new shows and movies hitting Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO this weekend. On Netflix, you won’t want to miss She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Season 2, which our Kayla Cobb describes as “funnier, queerer, and better than ever.” In the mood for a movie? Andrea Arnold’s American Honey will also be hitting Netflix this weekend, and it has all the drama you could ever want in a Saturday night flick. Over on HBO, be sure to stream The Darkest Minds, a star-studded affair about teenagers with mysterious superpowers who are on the run from the government.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: Season 2
Noelle Stevenson’s anime series is one you won’t soon forget. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power tells the story of Adora, a teenager who transforms into the titular Princess of Power, She-Ra, to rebel against the evil Hordak and his Horde. She-Ra recruits a group of other magical princesses in the fight, and it doesn’t take long before the group starts to kick some major ass. As our Kayla Cobb wrote in her review, She-Ra Season 2 leans further away from the original 1980s series, and in the process, it has become “one of the funniest, warmest, and most LGBT-inclusive series on television.”

American Honey
This A24 drama stars Sasha Lane as Star, a teenage girl living in Oklahoma with her abusive father. After years of abuse, Star decides to run away with a traveling sales crew that drives around the Midwest selling magazines door-to-door. Star immediately connects with one of her travel companions, Jake (Shia LaBeouf), but has a hard time meeting her boss Krystal’s (Riley Keough) expectations. While not a conventional coming-of-age drama, American Honey is incredibly affecting and beautifully shot. You’re going to want to stream this one ASAP.

The Darkest Minds
Turn off your brain with the latest addition to the “teens with extraordinary powers rebel against a dystopian government” genre. Amandla Stenberg stars as Ruby Daly, a teenager with a supernatural ability to get into people’s minds. Ruby is part of the 10% of American children who survived a contagious disease outbreak, but her powers make her dangerous, so the government has ordered her to be exterminated. In an attempt to survive, Ruby escapes with three other special teenagers, and the group soon launches a counter-attack on the oppressive society. With supporting performances from Bradley Whitford, Mandy Moore, and Gwendoline Christie, The Darkest Minds is a YA sci-fi adaptation well worth your time.
