Meghan McCain Almost Had a Shotgun Wedding When She Was “Very Drunk” in Las Vegas

In genuinely surprising news, Meghan McCain may actually have something in common with Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner. On Thursday, The View tackled the biggest pop culture breakout of the day: Joe Jonas and Turner’s post-Billboard Music Awards wedding. The View‘s co-hosts weren’t able to reach a consensus about whether the surprise wedding was “romantic” or not, but that’s neither here nor there because at the end of the segment, McCain dropped a major bomb when she reveled that she was once “stopped” from having a Las Vegas wedding of her own. “I personally think Elvis is romantic,” said McCain.

The View‘s Abby Huntsman was unsure about the Jonas-Turner elopement, saying, “I feel like the least you can do for your parents, after raising you all those years, is letting them witness you being handed off to someone else.” (Oof, lots to unpack there). Sunny Hostin felt differently. “I thought it was pretty romantic,” she asked. “Isn’t it kind of romantic that you just run away to Vegas or run away somewhere and get married?” Moderator Whoopi Goldberg said that she’s “done it three or four times,” adding that “it’s only romantic if you’re in love with the person you’re marrying.”

After staying quiet for much of the segment, McCain finally chimed in with a personal story. “For whatever it’s worth, I was stopped from doing this when I was very drunk,” revealed McCain. “Oh, thank goodness,” said Huntsman. Continued McCain, “That was in my early years in life. Because I love Vegas and crazy things really do happen there.”

The conservative co-host went on to say that Jonas and Turner tied the knot at “a very famous chapel that a lot of celebrities get married at,” but she understands why regular people would enjoy a more spontaneous wedding, too. “I will say, the Vegas weddings I’ve been to, a lot of times it’s financial,” said McCain. “Like my friends couldn’t afford to have a bigger wedding, and you can do it on a budget there, which is why Vegas is so great.”

But McCain wasn’t done baring her soul quite yet. “I personally think Elvis is romantic,” she said, sending her co-hosts and the audience into a fit of laughter. “There you go,” added Goldberg.
