House of Cards may be over, but Netflix isn’t getting out of the political game quite yet. Today, the streaming giant dropped a new trailer for Designated Survivor Season 3, the political drama’s first installment as a Netflix Original. Viewers concerned about the show’s move from ABC to Netflix shouldn’t be worried: if the the trailer is any indication, Designated Survivor Season 3 will feature the same conniving tactics, high-stakes action, and political thrills that fans have come to know and love.
Kiefer Sutherland returns as President Kirkman, a low-level cabinet official who is suddenly becomes President of the United States after a terrorist attack devastates the federal government and kills every person ahead of him in the line of succession. While Kirkman’s job was handed to him initially, he’s come to enjoy the power, and in Season 3, he faces a new challenge: campaigning for reelection. Designated Survivor‘s third season will explore what it takes to make a leader, as well as the price he’s willing to pay to secure his position. According to Netflix, new episodes will mirror the current battles playing out in real-life American politics. “This season will explore today’s world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and ‘fake news.’ Democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance,” the official description reads.
Designated Survivor‘s Season 3 cast includes many returning characters as well as a few new faces. Adam Canto, Italia Ricci, Kal Penn, and Maggie Q will all reprise their roles in Netflix’s revival, while Anthony Edwards, Lorraine Zimmer, Dontae Evans, and Isabel Pardo have joined the cast for the new installment.
All 10 episodes of Designated Survivor Season 3 premiere Friday, June 7. That gives you more than a month to binge-watch your way through the first two seasons on Netflix, so get to streaming!
