Game of Thrones keeps surprising us in its eighth and final season. Besides shocking us with a rousing last minute victory against the the Night King, last week’s episode, “The Long Night” also might have introduced a potential new couple in Westeros. Maybe? Sort of? We’re not sure and we don’t know how to feel about it?!?
While it’s true that Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) got married the way back in Game of Thrones Season 3, Episode 8, “Second Sons,” their partnership was always treated as it was: a sham marriage of convenience. However, in last week, while Sansa and Tyrion waited for doom in the Crypts of Winterfell, they almost...flirted?

I’m not just talking about how Tyrion kisses Sansa’s hand right before they take each other’s hands and rush into a crypt full of zombies. Earlier in the episode, after Sansa talks Tyrion down from his delusions of being useful in the fight, he, rather awed, says, “Maybe we should have stayed married.”

“You were the best of them,” she says with a wry smile.

Tyrion is visibly touched. It’s a far cry from their wedding night. Back then, Tyrion explained to the fourteen-year-old Sansa that he wouldn’t share her bed until she wanted him to, to which she cooly asked, “What if I never want you to?”

Here, a grown up and fully actualized Sansa is toying with the idea of spending her life with her first husband. She explains that it won’t work, not because she’s repulsed by him, but because of his loyalty to Daenerys. Still, that suggests maybe there is a glimmer of chemistry bouncing between them.
Are we supposed to be ‘shipping Tyrion and Sansa now???
Again, it’s unclear. After all, just in the week before, Game of Thrones was signaling that there might be some tender connection sparking between Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy. We speculated then that they were likely just finishing up the arc of their last storyline together, but that if Theon survived the Battle of Winterfell (which was unlikely), it could be that Sansa and him would be platonic partners.

The conversation between Sansa and Tyrion is very different as they directly talk about marriage, suggesting that there could be a potential future for them as a pair, but only if Daenerys was out of the picture. (Heck, Sansa could even be suggesting this to the ever-lonely Tyrion to strategically push him closer to the Starks and further from Daenerys’s camp — but I don’t think she’s that cooly calculating. Only about halfway there.)
So are we supposed to want Sansa and Tyrion together? Should we be expecting a vow renewal ceremony by series’ end?

The answer to the the first question is tricky and it probably comes down to your personal feelings about the characters’ relationship. I remember reading the books and thinking that if Sansa were far older, they could have a pretty happy marriage of convenience. Now that we’ve seen what both have evolved into on the show, their personalities do seem to go together. Sansa admires Tyrion for his kindness and he’s wowed by her intellect. Together they could be the kind of power couple that rules behind the throne.
However, the answer to the second question is probably a resounding no. Sansa herself has poo-poo-ed the suggestion, and as we keep reminding ourselves, Game of Thrones is not likely to have a happy ending. In fact, it’s probably going to be at best bittersweet and at worst, upsetting.
Now, the question I want answered is…does Sansa know that Tyrion murdered Shae?
