There Was a Starbucks Coffee Cup in Last Night’s Episode of ‘Game of Thrones’

Tall chai tea latte for Daenerys? On Sunday night, Game of Thrones aired Season 8, Episode 4, and between the shocking deaths (rest in peace, Missandei) and the even more shocking sex scenes — you get that D, Brienne! — it was quite a doozy. But eagle-eyed viewers hopped up on caffeine also noticed something else amid Sunday night’s drama: a coffee cup, courtesy of the year 2019. No, Game of Thrones isn’t suddenly incorporating time travel; instead, it seems that someone put their drink (white lid and all) down on the table and forgot to remove it before resuming filming. Talk about product placement, Starbucks.

Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 4, “The Last of the Starks,” begins with a party. After burning the last of their dead, the crew at Winterfell send them off in the only way they know how: with a rager. Everyone gets drunk, and at one point, Tormund waxes poetic about Jon’s many accomplishments. During Tormund’s speech, the camera cuts back to Daenerys, who looks none too happy that Jon has become the belle of the ball. At that moment — around the 17:38 mark — a Starbucks-esque coffee cup can clearly be seen on the table in front of Daenerys, which might explain why she’s so upset all the time. May we suggest a tequila shot instead of the latte?

Viewers pointed out the prop mistake almost immediately, and within minutes, the moment became the meme of the night. “You’re telling me they had TWO YEARS to put together a decent show and they couldn’t even spot the goddamn Starbucks cup in Winterfell??!” asked one viewer. “That Winterfell Starbucks cashier ain’t ready to write Dany’s name on her coffee cup,” joked another. “Guys it’s not Starbucks, it’s Winterfell’s own coffee chain ‘Dire cup,'” tweeted another fan.

Next week, Game of Thrones will air Season 8, Episode 5, its penultimate episode. A title has not been announced yet, but rumor has it that the working title is “The Battle of Dunkin’.”
