The ‘Game of Thrones’ Showrunners Were IN The Infamous Coffee Cup Scene

The biggest shocker in Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 4, “The Last of the Starks” wasn’t a major character death, but the fact that someone on the Game of Thrones set left a Starbucks coffee cup in a major scene. That’s right: eagle-eyed viewers caught the cup on the head table in the Great Hall of Winterfell, placed somewhere between Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington).

While it’s unclear whose cup it was, we do know that it all happened in plain sight of the Game of Thrones showrunners. That’s because the extended behind-the-scenes featurette about last night’s episode reveals that Game of Thrones writers and executive producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff were in that scene.

Even more embarrassing? Benioff and Weiss were dressed up as the drunk wildlings that Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) were regailing, meaning that coffee cup would have been directly in their line of sight.

In HBO’s The Game Revealed: The Last of the Starks, an off-screen interviewer asks Benioff if he and Dan Weiss are in any of the episodes. Benioff confirms that he and Weiss are the long-haired, bearded warriors in the infamous scene and the documentary cuts to a series of behind-the-scenes footage of the duo on set. It is immediately clear that the cast is having a field day with them. Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke are repeatedly seen bursting into laughter, and Sophie Turner can be seen with her iPhone out taking a photo of the showrunners in costume. All of which is to say…everyone seemed…distracted in that shot.

Based on the camera set ups, it seems that Benioff and Weiss should have noticed someone’s Starbucks order next to the goblets of Dornish red, but it also seems like everyone was having too good a time on set to notice intricate little details like that.

Perhaps the biggest insult to injury is that The Game Revealed features Weiss saying, “Uh, I was concerned we were going to ruin that [scene], but I don’t think we did.” Maybe…you did?
