I know the truth: you’re not reading this intro paragraph. And why would you? It’s Friday and you’re counting down the minutes until you have that sweet, sweet weekend freedom. You’re only here because you want to know what movies are new on VOD this weekend, not for any small talk. You’ve come to the right place, because I’m done with the chit chat and ready to give you the goods. Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover.
If you’ve held off on watching the family friendly animated sequel The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part or the romcom remake What Men Want, you’re in luck. Both new movies are now available to rent, meaning you can make Saturday night a 2019 double feature for a fraction of the cost. Elsewhere this week are two very different but very intriguing documentaries. There’s They Shall Not Grow Old, a look at World War I from director Peter Jackson that painstaking colorized previously unseen battle footage to create an immersive, close-up look at the war. On the other end of the spectrum is Scary Stories, a look at the iconic children’s horror book that was highly controversial when they were released in the ’80s.
What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of dramas, comedies, and horror films!
Everybody Knows
This critically acclaimed Spanish thriller stars Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in roles that earned them nominations at this year’s Goya Awards (a.k.a. the Spanish Oscars). Cruz stars as a woman with a few secrets of her own scrambling to find her kidnapped daughter. The film comes from Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, who won the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award in 2012 for A Separation. If the trailer above piques your interest, you can follow through and rent the film right now.

Her Smell
In Her Smell, Elisabeth Moss tears into the role of punk singer Becky Something in a fearless film that documents the trials of love, loss, success, and failure. The film also stars Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens as Becky’s ex-husband and Suicide Squad’s Cara Delevingne as a rival punk musician. The film earned solid reviews from critics while it was on the festival circuit, who praised Moss’ performance as “gripping.”

Mission: Impossible–Fallout
Seriously, are you gonna turn down the chance to watch a mustachioed Henry Cavill pump his arms like shotguns during a bathroom brawl with a mid-50s Tom Cruise? I don’t think so. This movie is 147 minutes of breathtaking action and mind-bending plot twists and well worth renting for $0.99. And again: Henry Cavill’s arms. This is now on your schedule for the weekend.
