‘Night School’ on HBO: Where Does Tiffany Haddish Find the Time?

Tiffany Haddish has been working non-stop since Girls Trip launched her into stardom, and while I respect her hustle, I’m also concerned she is not getting enough sleep. Case in point: Night School, a 2018 comedy airing this Saturday night on HBO at 8pm ET. That film—which was helmed by Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee— is one of nine films that Haddish has somehow found time for in the mere two years since Girls Trip hit theaters the summer of 2017. If that’s not enough, she’s also done five TV shows in that time, too! In case that’s not enough, she also released a stand-up special, hosted Saturday Night Live (for which she won an Emmy) and executive-produced a new animated series for Netflix, Tuca & Bertie (in which she also stars). I don’t know whether to bow down or to stage an intervention.

If you don’t remember Night School among all the various things you’ve seen Haddish in recently, we don’t blame you. To refresh your memory: Haddish plays a tough-love teacher named Carrie, who is tasked with forcing Kevin Hart’s character, Teddy, to finish night school and finally get his high school degree. The supporting cast includes Taran Killam as a strict principal, Ben Schwartz as Hart’s BFF and Rob Riggle as another student at the school. The comedy was not well-received by critics—it has a 27 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes—but most agreed that wasn’t the fault of Haddish.

The 39-old comedian—who, before the success of Girls Trip, had mostly done smaller TV guest roles—is clearly on a roll right now. Let’s just count the projects by year, shall we?
