It may not be a party in the USA right now, but it’s about to be a party on Netflix. This morning, the streaming giant dropped the trailer for Black Mirror Season 5, starring none other than the legend herself, Miley Cyrus. The Hannah Montana star will headline one of three unique stories featured in the fifth season, which will continue Black Mirror‘s focus on the sinister nature of modern technology. In addition to dropping the trailer, Netflix announced that all three episodes in Black Mirror Season 5 will premiere Wednesday, June 5, roughly six months after the anthology’s last installment, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, hit the platform.
According to Variety, Cyrus’ Black Mirror role is a meta version of her own story: the singer and actress stars as a performer who undergoes a major transformation to take her fame to the next level. Within seconds in the trailer, Cyrus goes from a makeup-free singer to a purple wig-wearing star, all to make her “20,000 fans” proud (this seems like a gross underestimation of her fandom, but I digress). It remains to be seen whether Cyrus actually performs her own songs in Season 5, but I’m choosing to keep hope alive that we’ll get a synth version of “Wrecking Ball” in the near future.
Cyrus isn’t the only big star featured in Black Mirror Season 5. Variety reports that Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace, Damson Idris, Andrew Scott, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport, and Ludi Lin will all appear in the new installment. The trailer teases Mackie and Davenport’s individual storylines: Mackie plays a husband unhappy with his marriage, and Davenport plays a teenager who finds a friend in an Amazon Alexa-like piece of technology. Grace can also be seen towards the end of the trailer looking like some kind of yogi or cult leader (he can only be seen from the shoulders-up, so it’s hard to tell).
