Is ‘John Wick’ on Netflix?

Just when Film Twitter haughtily declared that the original movie was dead, a little action thriller named John Wick swooped onto the scene in 2014. It was written and directed by two guys no one had heard of (Derek Kolstad and Chad Stahelski, respectively). It starred Keanu Reeves, who we all knew from The Matrix, but who hadn’t had a big, popular action role in over a decade. It was about an assassin seeking revenge on the men who killed his dog which, while relatable, seems like a pretty silly concept for a neo-noir action thriller.

And yet somehow, miraculously, everything fell into place. The reviews were good: The film is certified fresh 87 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and The New York Times called it “a crafty revenge thriller.” The box office numbers were good: It made $88.7 million on a budget of $20 million and became one of the top 20 highest-grossing assassin films of all time. Cue the sequel, obviously! And the second sequel! The third film in the franchise, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, opens in theaters nationwide today. In other words, if you missed out on the first film, now would be a really good time to catch up.
