After a year off the air, a whole lot of behind the scenes drama, a cast shakeup, and a network change, it’s good to finally have Project Runway back on TV again. Bravo’s revamped Season 17 has taken the show back to its roots–in more ways than one. Not only is the new season on the show’s original network, but Runway’s slick, fashion-forward makeover makes the show feel very of the moment. Still, not everything is different. Elle editor-in-chief Nina Garcia is still the judge to impress and superstar Project Runway winner Christian Siriano is in the mentor role.
But while this season has delivered its fair share of surprises and given us PR superfans new designers worthy of entering the all-time canon (Hester Sunshine is a kooky star, y’all), it’s been missing something. It’s been missing something that was absolutely essential to the show’s decade on Lifetime, and I’ve been anxiously waiting to see what Bravo would do. After waiting 10 very long weeks, I finally have my answer: Swatch is back!
Okay, Swatch probably never went away, because I bet this lazy old pup does about as much walking IRL as he does on camera. But after appearing in almost every episode for the past few seasons, this sleeping sleeper star was noticeably absent from the first 9 episodes of this season. Honestly, he may have been glimpsed for a split second in an early episode this season, but the fact that I can’t clearly recall it proves my point. We’ve not had nearly enough Swatch this season. Episode 10 finally gives us Swatch fans the content we’ve been craving for so long: a frenzied shopping montage punctuated by shots of Swatch grunting or snoring!
Swatch is the best, a cuddly little curmudgeon that was the star of every trip to Mood for almost all of the Lifetime run. Swatch’s interactions with Tim Gunn were always delightful, with the former Runway mentor talking to the lil’ star so matter-of-factly. Swatch was so integral to the show that I even listed “pet Swatch” as one thing every designer has to do to win!
And then Season 17 started and this Very Good Dog was nowhere to be seen! Boo! That’s why seeing the pooch tonight was delightful. It was great seeing Swatch get a lower-third graphic, it was great watching Hester tread lightly (Swatch moves for no one), and it was great seeing Christian react to the canine. You can’t go wrong with Swatch. More. Swatch!
