We all knew that Dany was on her way out. It was just a matter of when. After going full mad queen last episode she fully lost the trust of her nephew-boyfriend Jon Snow and her righthand man Tyrion. The Game of Thrones finale saw Dany murdering everyone in King’s Landing who was still loyal to Cersei. That didn’t fly with Jon. As she was gloating over finally gaining control of the Iron Throne, Jon gave her one last kiss. He then stabbed her, killing his lover and his queen.

Drogon the dragon then swept in to mourn the death of his mom. But instead of burninating Jon, he melted the Iron Throne. There’s a very good chance Drogon is the smartest character in this show.

The destruction of the Iron Throne forced the leaders of Westeros to actively choose a new king or queen, and this time Jon Snow’s name wasn’t in the running. Even without the huge death that was unveiled tonight, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss’ final season has been a rollercoaster of terrible twists. First there was the (literally) dark Battle of Winterfell, which saw the defeat of The Night King by Arya’s (Maisie Williams) sword. That epic moment came at the cost of Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen), Melisandre (Carice van Houten), Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey), and a long list of other fan favorites. And because Game of Thrones only knows one speed, the bloodshed didn’t slow down from there. Episode 5 saw the deaths of Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), who naturally died in each others arms, incest be damned. That same episode saw Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) go full mad queen and basically destroy all of King’s Landing with the help of her last trusty dragon.

But even that angry Dany plot twist was nothing compared to the shock Game of Thrones’ ultimate finale. To all of the Westeros heroes who gave their lives for this epic saga, you will be missed. Now on to wildly speculating about those spinoff series. Fingers crossed we get something about Arya exploring the West.
