Hulu Summer TV Preview: ‘Veronica Mars,’ ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral,’ ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and More

You don’t have to wait until the first day of summer to enjoy some scorching hot Hulu content. Maya Erskine and Anna Konkl’s PEN15 is a wonderfully bizarre treat; The Act is a bonafide cultural phenomenon; and if you’re looking for an under-the-radar gem, look no further than Hulu’s exceptional dramedy Casual. Not only is there plenty of TV available to stream right now, but there’s a slew of new shows coming your way in the summer of 2019.

Long before Kristen Bell was turning the afterlife upside down on The Good Place, she was the coolest high school private eye on the block on Veronica Mars. From 2004-2007, this stealthily cool UPN/CW gained a passionate following, so much so that fans helped finance the 2014 film that continued the Veronica Mars story. Now, fifteen years after the premiere episode aired on UPN, Hulu has resurrected the series for an eight-episode fourth season. It’s a true television miracle. But Veronica Mars isn’t the only high-profile TV series debuting on Hulu this summer. Mindy Kaling’s Four Weddings and a Funeral is set premiere on the platform this July.

What else will you be streaming in between beach trips? Here are all the new and returning shows coming to Hulu this summer.

'Veronica Mars'

Premiere Date: July 26th

Who’s In It: Kristen Bell, Ryan Hansen, Enrico Colantoni, Ken Marino, Percy Daggs, Jason Dohring, JK Simmons, and more.

What’s It About? It’s spring break in Neptune and someone is bombing the city’s hotels in an attempt to destroy its appeal as a top tier spring break destination. All eight episodes will be released on July 26th.

Who’s In It: Nathalie Emmanuel, Nikesh Patel, Rebecca Rittenhouse, John Paul Reynolds, Brandon Mychal Smith, Andie MacDowell, Tommy Dewey

What’s It About? Four weddings and a funeral, I’d guess? Kidding. Based on the 1994 rom-com of the same name, the ten-episode season (with episodes being released weekly) centers on four American friends who reunite for a London wedding. Relationships are forged and broken and love affairs are ignited and doused as a bombshell at the altar throws their lives into turmoil.

Premiere Date: June 5th

Who’s In It: Elizabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle

What’s It About? Per Hulu, the thirteen episode third season is driven by June’s resistance to the dystopian regime of Gilead and her struggle to strike back against overwhelming odds. Startling reunions, betrayals, and a journey to the terrifying heart of Gilead will force all characters to take a stand, guided by one defiant prayer: “Blessed be the fight.”
