Amazon Prime Video Summer Preview: ‘Good Omens’, ‘The Boys’, ‘Chasing Happiness’, and More

Amazon, we’re cool for the summer. Over the next few months, Amazon Prime Video is releasing countless new shows and movies, all of which will be perfect for your summer streaming queue. Sure, the weather outside may not be frightful, but the air conditioning is so delightful. That’s how that song goes, right?

This summer, Amazon is coming in hot with limited series adaptations, music documentaries, superhero dramas, and docu-series galore. Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens, starring Michael Sheen, David Tennant, and many more, kicks off off the summer season on May 31 — right under the wire for Emmys eligibility. Just a few weeks later, the Jonas Brothers make their highly-anticipated return with Chasing Happiness, a documentary that follows the JoBros as they attempt to get the band back together (spoiler: it worked!).

But those aren’t the only high-profile titles debuting on Amazon this summer. Absentia Season 2, Nicholas Winding Refn’s drama series Too Old to Die Young, and antihero tale The Boys will also hit Prime Video in June and July, so you should have no problem setting up an Independence Day binge-watch fit for the whole family.

Curious what else you’ll be watching this summer? Consider this your official guide to Amazon Prime Video’s Summer 2019 streaming slate.

'Good Omens'

Premiere Date: May 31

Who’s In It: Michael Sheen, David Tennant, Jon Hamm, Frances McDormand, Benedict Cumberbatch, Nick Offerman, Michael McKean, Jack Whitehall, Mireille Enos, Miranda Richardson, and Derek Jacobi

What It’s About: Based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s classic fantasy novel, Good Omens follows angel Aziraphale (Sheen) and a rebellious demon (Tennant) as they attempt to prevent the Apocalypse. The duo forms an unlikely friendship as they work to hold off the arrival of the anti-Christ, but their responsibilities are soon made more complicated by a cast of characters of biblical proportions, including Archangel Gabriel (Hamm), God (McDormand), and Satan (Cumberbatch). This six-episode limited series is likely to be a major player this awards season, so be sure to check it out when it hits Amazon on May 31.

'Chasing Happiness'

Premiere Date: June 4

Who’s In It: Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas, Kevin Jonas, Paul Kevin Jonas Sr.

What It’s About: The Jonas Brothers are back, baby! This feature-length documentary gives fans an inside-look at the JoBros’ journey from small-town musicians to pop superstars to solo artists to pop superstars once more. Chasing Happiness follows the brothers as they go their separate ways, only to rebuild their relationships (and the band) over five years later. Jonas Brothers fan or not, Chasing Happiness is an absolute must-stream, particularly for those eager to see just how far the pop stars have come since their Disney days (yes, there’s footage of that, too).

'Absentia' Season 2

Premiere Date: June 14

Who’s In It: Stana Katic, Patrick Heusinger, Cara Theobold, Neil Jackson, Angel Bonanni, Paul Freeman, Patrick McAuley, Matthew Le Nevez, and Natasha Little

What It’s About: Absentia Season 2 continues to tell the story of FBI agent Emily Byrne (Katic), who was abducted and held in a cabin in the woods for six years. After tracking down and killing her abductor, Emily is now attempting to deal with her trauma and rebuild her relationship with her son, Flynn (McAuley). Emily may be trying to move forward, but the darkness of her past overwhelms her, and she ends up conducting a secret investigation into her history. One serial killer and a few conspiracies later, Emily finds herself in grave danger once again.

'Too Old to Die Young' Season 1

Premiere Date: June 14

Who’s In It: Miles Teller, Jena Malone, Billy Baldwin, John Hawkes, Nell Tiger Free, Babs Olusanmokun, Callie Hernandez, and Cristina Rodlo

What It’s About: The only non-Amazon Original on this list, Too Old to Die Young is downright dazzling. Nicholas Winding Refn’s television debut centers on a group of people who embark upon an existential journey that transforms them from killers into samurais. Refn has devoted more than a year to the 10-part series (he directed all 10 episodes himself), and judging by the trailer, all of that effort has been worth it. But first, a heads up: each episode of Too Old to Die Young is expected to last at least 90 minutes, so make sure you have plenty of time to queue up this eye-catching drama.

'The Boys'

Premiere Date: July 26

Who’s In It: Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Chace Crawford, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capon, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, and Elisabeth Shue

What It’s About: Based on Garth Ennis’ graphic novels, The Boys follows two warring groups of superheroes: The Boys, led by Bill Butcher (Urban) and Hughie (Quaid), and The Seven, a famous squad of heroes that have started abusing their powers. As The Boys attempt to bring down The Seven, they learn about a vast, multi-billion dollar conspiracy to cover up the superheroes’ dirty deeds, raising the stakes in their heroic quest. Thanks to the combined power of showrunner Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and producing partners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, The Boys is the antihero tale to watch this summer.

As Mill pleads his own case, he becomes an activist for others in similar situations, and he sets out to expose flaws in the criminal justice system that disproportionately affect Americans of color.
