**Who Was the Couple:** Arya (Maisie Williams) and Gendry (Joe Dempsie)
**Why Was It Hated:** Out of all the entries on this list, Arya and Gendry's loving hookup is the least repulsive, but boy was it despised by some fans. Some people just don't want to see their favorite little assassin all grown up. But we at Decider are all for Arya getting some consensual D.

**Who Was the Couple:** Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson)
**Why Was It Hated:** In the 2000s no one was hornier than *Twilight* fans. All they wanted was for these two pale hotties to bone. Which they did in a scene filled with disappointing cutaways, bed-breaking, and insta-pregnancy. Because nothing's steamier than the responsibility of parenthood.

Who Was the Couple: Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana)
Why Was It Hated: Avatar gets a lot of hate for being the only mega-successful movie no one can remember. But it has one thing going for it. No other major blockbuster has had the guts to show tenacle sex onscreen. And to every one of those other movies, we say thank you. So glad there are going to be four more of these bad boys!

***Fifty Shades Freed***

**Who Was the Couple:** Ana Grey (Dakota Johnson) and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan)
**Why Was It Hated:** There are so many terribly boring sex scenes in a franchise that was only sold on being sexy. But the ice cream blow job scene takes the cake. Everything is so runny and lukewarm and just gross. If it ended with Ana vomiting, that would make sense.

***Riverdale***

**Who Was the Couple:** Archie (KJ Apa) and Mrs. Grundy (Sarah Habel)
**Why Was It Hated:** Do you know what's never cool? A teacher having sex with his or her high school student. That's called assault... Unless you're on *Riverdale*. In that case it's called a pretty major plot point that's glossed over for more murder talk.

***Splice***

**Who Was the Couple:** Clive (Adrien Brody) and Dren (Delphine Chanéac)
**Why Was It Hated:** Adrien Brody has sex with the alien creature he created. She's essentially his daughter. So this 2009 sci-fi movie has the big three: creature sex, semi-incest, and something bordering on child abuse...? It's all unclear and all horrible.

***Girls***

**Who Was the Couple:** Adam (Adam Driver) and Natalia (Shiri Appleby)
**Why Was It Hated:** Lena Dunham's HBO show had more than its fair share of controversial sex scenes, but this hookup between Adam and his new girlfriend was one of the few that was actively despised. Though the show's creators and stars argued it was just bad sex, many viewers interpreted Adam and Natalia's cringe-worthy hookup as too close to sexual assault for comfort.

***Black Mirror***

**Who Was the Couple:** Prime Minister Michael Callow (Rory Kinnear) and a pig
**Why Was It Hated:** I mean... the Prime Minister has sex with a pig. He does it to save his family and the fate of the royal princess. But... the Prime Minister has sex with a pig. The only thing that made this scene even worse is that it weirdly predicted a scandal that would later emerge about David Cameron.

***Last Tango in Paris***

**Who Was the Couple:** Paul (Marlon Brando) and Jeanne (Maria Schneider)
**Why Was It Hated:** It was the butter scene that transformed this movie about a widowed man and a young Parisian woman from scandalous to controversial. But it was the late Schnieder's revelation that no one told her about the scene prior to her filming it that turned it into one of the most notoriously hated scenes in film history.

A wise musical group once said “Doesn’t matter, had sex.” That may be true in real life but with all respect to The Lonely Island, when it comes to onscreen sex scenes it very much does matter. It matters so much. If you mess up a sexy encounter in your own bedroom it’s just a bummer for you and whatever unfortunate soul you dragged into your mistake. But mess up onscreen and you run the risk of enraging and traumatizing thousands of people. And these hated gems are the worst of the worst.

There’s a fine line between a bad sex scene and a hated one. A bad sex scene can run the full course of quality, becoming so horrendous it actually becomes perversely (pun intended) enjoyable again. That’s how movies like The Room, Howard the Duck, and Watchmen have come to be joyously uplifted despite being unapologetically terrible. The above scenes aren’t that.

These scenes have inspired deep-seated, verbal hatred. They’ve triggered outraged tweets and think pieces about the consistency of ice cream, the line between bad sex and assault, and way too many takes on incest. They’ve grossed us out and made us question one of our most base human reactions when it would have cost them absolutely zero dollars to not do that.
