There’s only one show on television capable of making you terrified of the weather, and it just wrapped up its second season. But don’t worry: if you’re wondering what the heck was going on during the final episode of The Rain Season 2 on Netflix, we have your back.

Created by Jannik Tai Mosholt, Esben Toft Jacobsen, and Christian Potalivo, The Rain has emerged as one of Netflix’s best foreign language originals. The sci-fi drama follows a world where a virus carried by a deadly rainfall kills most of Scandinavia. In the midst of this mass destruction, one determined young woman (Alba August) and her whiny little brother (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) emerge as the only two people capable of possibly saving humanity. Can they do it? Barely.

Part survival drama, part claustrophobic nightmare, The Rain has a little bit of something for all fans of gritty sci-fi. And with its Season 2 ending, it’s shifted the drama forecast from a light drizzle to a torrential downpour. Here’s your guide to The Rain‘s Season 2 ending, and what may happen in The Rain Season 3.

What Happens to Rasmus in The Rain Season 2’s Finale?

Long story short? Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) loses his mind. “Keep It Together” ended with the sweet and self-sacrificing Lea (Jessica Dinnage) giving her life to potentially cure Rasmus. That meant The Rain Season 2’s final episode opened with everyone believing Rasmus is cured, including Lea’s grieving boyfriend Jean (Sonny Lindberg). Turns out that wasn’t entirely true.

Jean turns on his friends in a fit of revenge-filled rage and alerts the evil organization Apollon to their location. Since Apollon’s only goal seems to be capturing and killing Rasmus, that’s a really bad thing. It’s not long before gun-toting soldiers file in and start chasing our heroes. Just when it looks like everyone may escape, tragedy strikes. Rasmus’ new Season 2 girlfriend Sarah (Clara Rosager) is hit with a bullet and dies.

Sarah’s death causes Rasmus to go on his own killing spree. It turns out he was never cured of the virus, he can just control it better now. He unleashes the virus on the swarms of Apollon soldiers attacking him and refuses to stop until his sister Simone (Alba August) confronts him. After a tense encounter, Rasmus tries to kill Simone’s boyfriend with his new virus superpowers before Simone shoots him. Thankfully (unfortunately?) those new superpowers also give Rasmus special healing abilities, so Simone’s gunshot isn’t fatal.

The Rain Season 2 ends with Rasmus willingly handing himself over to Apollon forces. The implication behind this sacrifice is that Rasmus will be killed so that the virus can be extracted from him and used to create an antidote. Which, honestly, after murdering so many people doesn’t seem like such a horrible sacrifice.

Is Sarah Really Dead?

Let’s back up a second because not everything is as grim as it appears. Right before Sarah died of a gunshot wound, she asked Rasmus to kiss her. It’s definitely not a coincidence that the last shot we see in Season 2 is a cold, pale, and virus-plagued Sarah gasping awake.

It looks like Rasmus’ virus has life-saving powers. Or maybe this means he can turn the recently dead people into the undead. Does this mean that everyone can return to semi-life if Rasmus kisses them? That’s a lot of lips and Rasmus is only one young man. It’s all very unclear, but one thing’s for sure. This season warned us that the virus could mutate, and by god it’s mutated.

What Could Happen in The Rain Season 3?

If we know Simone, and by now we definitely do, she’s not going to abandon her baby brother on the chopping block. If there is a Season 3, it will likely revolve around Simone and possibly her brooding boyfriend Martin (Mikkel Følsgaard) trying to save Rasmus before the Apollon officers kill him. However, the most interesting part of a new season will probably revolve around Simone and Rasmus’ changed relationship. It’s not everyday that you try to kill your sibling.

A third season will also likely explore the rest of the rain-repellant gang. Sarah returning to the land of the living raises more than a couple of questions. But beyond the how and why of her virus-soaked return, there’s the Lea of it all. Lea also died in connection to Rasmus. Could he somehow bring her back to life? And where does the traitorous Jean fit into all of this? Is he ever going to regret selling out his friends or is he permanently done with Simone’s quest to protect her brother? Fingers crossed that a Season 3 will answer all this, and more.
