Godzilla (2014)

How many times can one possibly watch a giant lizard destroy cities and/or fight off other giant animals who are also trying to destroy cities? The answer: A lot, apparently. There are over 30 films in the Godzilla franchise, and there’s soon to be another with Godzilla: King of the MonstersFor this one, you can thank the 2014 Legendary Pictures film, Godzilla, which did so well in the box office that the sequel was greenlit opening weekend.

Originally, Godzilla director Gareth Edwards was signed on for the sequel, but then jumped ship when he was too busy directing Rogue One. This prompted star Aaron Taylor Johnson to leave the project as well. Now Godzilla: King of the Monsters is helmed by Krampus director Michael Dougherty, and stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown and Bradley Whitford. Sally Hawkings, Juliette Binoche and Ken Watanabe will all reprise their roles from the first film. And let’s be honest: The guy from West Wing whispering “zilla” after someone says “My God,” is the definition of a perfect summer movie.

You might ask: What does Godzilla: King of Monsters have to do with Kong: Skull Island, that movie that Brie Larson claimed was a victory for female journalists? Basically, both Godzilla films and the King Kong film are set up for the main event of the Legendary Pictures MonsterVerse: Godzilla vs. Kong, which is set to release in 2020. Now that sounds like a film you don’t want to miss, right? In the meantime, here’s how to catch up on the first Godzilla film in the Legendary MonsterVerse.

IS GODZILLA ON NETFLIX?

Sadly no, though great Gojira was once on Netflix, the film left on May 1, which seems like an odd choice given the impending release of its sequel film. There are, however, several animated Japanese Godzilla films on Netflix, as well as the 2005 King Kong movie (which is not connected to the 2017 Kong: Skull Island movie).

IS GODZILLA ON HULU?

I regret to inform you that Godzilla (2014) is not available to stream with a regular Hulu subscription. However, the good news is that Godzilla (2014) is available to stream with a Hulu Live TV subscription. And if you’re interested in the old school ‘Zilla, Hulu is also streaming many of the Japanese films from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s with a Starz add-on.

IS GODZILLA ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO?

Yes, but you will have to pay for it. Godzilla (2014) is available to rent on Prime Video for $3.99, or you can purchase the film for $9.99. Buying things? In this economy?

WHERE ELSE CAN I WATCH GODZILLA ONLINE?

Godzilla (2014) is also available for purchase on iTunes, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu, PlayStation Video and Fandango now. I know, I know: It’s a pain to pay extra for content when you’re already paying for multiple streaming services. But if you want to watch the giant lizard breathe fire, that’s what you’ll have to do.
