‘Transparent’ Series Finale: First Look Teases a Boundary-Pushing Musical Event

“Maura’s dead.” With just two words, Transparent has changed everything ahead of its musical series finale. Today, Amazon Prime Video dropped the first teaser trailer for the feature-length Musicale Finale event, which will follow the Pfeffermans as they attempt to cope with Maura’s (Jeffrey Tambor) death through song. Creator Jill Soloway confirmed Maura’s death in April, more than a year after Tambor was fired from Transparent due to allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior (he has denied all allegations).

Amazon’s teaser shows each Pfefferman at the exact moment they learn about Maura’s death. Shelley (Judith Light) knocks over some workout equipment, Josh (Jay Duplass) drops a coffee pot, Ali (Gaby Hoffmann) sits on an airplane, and Sarah (Amy Landecker) almost crashes her car. As they begin to grieve, Sarah reminds her mother to “act respectfully” — a task Shelley finds particularly complicated. “That’s a lot to ask,” replies Shelley, her voice shaking. “It’s my boundary,” says Sarah.

The back and forth inspires the trailer’s only musical moment: a brief clip of Shelley performing “Your Boundary Is My Trigger.” Speaking with the Los Angeles Times in April, Soloway described the number — which will be a mother-daughter piece showcasing Light and Landecker’s range — as “extreme.” Soloway continued, “It hits the most extreme high notes. I feel like 67-year-old Jewish moms are going to be seen in a new way.”

The Transparent Musicale Finale teaser doesn’t go into additional detail about the Pfeffermans’ show — however, we did catch a flash of Kathryn Hahn’s Rabbi Raquel! —  but Amazon has given viewers a bit more information about what they should expect. “When the Pfeffermans face a life-changing loss, they begin a journey hilarious and melancholy, brazen and bold,” reads Amazon’s official description of the series finale. “As they face this new transition, they confront grief and come together to celebrate connection, joy, and transformation.”

The Transparent Musicale Finale will hit Amazon Prime Video this fall. Watch the first teaser trailer above.
