‘Fear the Walking Dead’ Finally Gave Fans What They Wanted: A Lennie James Shower Scene

It’s been a while since the Walking Dead franchise has given us a good shower scene. There was Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Lori (Sarah Wayne-Callies) way back in Season 1 of TWD. Then in Season 6, we saw Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Glenn (Steven Yeun) get their soap on, before the latter lost his head (literally). And finally, Fear the Walking Dead delivered the scene fans have been begging for since the spinoff began: topless Morgan (Lennie James).

Spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead “The Hunt That Will Happen” past this point.

Okay, fine, of course nobody asked for that (despite Lennie James being a very handsome gentleman). And if you had money in the “who will take off their shirt off first on FTWD” sweepstakes, Morgan probably would be dead last. The poetic sometimes pacifist has wrestled with his own sanity so many times, removing his clothing was probably the farthest thing from anyone’s minds.

Yet that’s exactly what happened this week, as Morgan and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) encountered a new character studying irradiated zombies in the Texas area. Morgan tussles with a walker, gets captured by the scientist, and is told he needs to get clean — which seems like a purposeful callback/riff on the classic Morgan Walking Dead episode “Clear,” but I digress.

In order to get clean, he needs to shower in non-irradiated water dispensed by the scientist’s truck. And in order to do that, he’s told to take off his clothing… Including his wedding ring. That’s the point of the scene, by the way, to show how much Morgan has grown. He had lost his wife the first time we met him, way back in the premiere of The Walking Dead. To take off that ring for any reason is a big step in the character potentially moving on with his life, and naturally he’s hesitant to even consider the idea.

But he does anyway, and we’re treated to an extended sequence of Morgan scrubbing himself, naked, in the woods. You only get to see his top half and a bit of his legs, you perverts, but hey, you can add it to the extremely short of list of Walking Dead shower scenes if you want. Will this lead to even more Morgan nudity? Without his trusty stick (it’s also been irradiated, and yes, we’re actually talking about his weapon NOT his… You know), and his wedding ring off, will he accept his true destiny as the post-apocalypse’s most prominent nudist?

AMC

Eh, probably not. Though given the general lack of running water in the Walking Dead universe, it’s still very calming to see someone take a bath, whatever the circumstances.

Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
