Rachel Maddow Encourages Democrats to Impeach Trump: “Who Cares Who It’s Good For?”

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow wants Democrats to commit to impeaching President Trump. On Tuesday, the cable news host took her talents to basic cable, where she and Late Night host Seth Meyers discussed the problem with trying to “game out” the political implications of impeachment. According to Maddow, Democrats should “approach impeachment in terms of the constitutional imperative,” as that is “more likely to persuade the country” than worrying about future election results and favorability polls. “Who cares who it’s good for?” asked Maddow.

When asked about whether impeachment is “a fool’s errand,” Maddow said that this is another example of “Democrats outthinking themselves.” She compared the issue to “electability,” saying, “You can’t personally work out who is the most electable candidate to win the primary.” Explained Maddow, “You can’t really game out what the political impact of impeachment is going to be. That’s not the kind of process impeachment is.”

“If a president commits high crimes and misdemeanors, the way the Congress is supposed to hold him accountable is by opening an impeachment inquiry, doing an investigation and then voting on whether or not they think that it rises to that level,” Maddow told Meyers. She went on to say that “whether or not that hurts the president” or “hurts” or “helps the Democrats” is both “unknowable” and “should be beside the point.”

“If you’re doing it for the right reasons, I think you are more likely to persuade the country that you’ve done it for the right reasons rather than you having tried to think everybody around the corner in terms of how this is supposed to work out,” continued Maddow. “Approach these things simply. Pick the best candidate who you think would make the best president. Approach impeachment in terms of the constitutional imperative here. Who cares who it’s good for?”

Added Maddow, “Just do what you think is right. Don’t worry about what people say about you.”
