‘Mr. Iglesias’ on Netflix: All the Info on Gabriel Iglesias’ New Sitcom

Gabriel Iglesias has been killing it on stages across the country for a long time now, but there’s one stage he’s skipped: the sitcom soundstage. Aside from a few guest spots, this A-list standup has somehow never had a sitcom of his own! Now he does, thanks to Netflix, and all 10 episodes of Mr. Iglesias Season 1 are coming to Netflix soon.

If you’re curious about Netflix’s latest multi-cam sitcom or want to make sure you’re prepared for Iglesias’ latest project, we’ve got you covered. Below you’ll find out everything you need to know about Mr. Iglesias, from the show’s premise to its cast.

What is Mr. Iglesias on Netflix about?

Stand-up superstar Gabriel Iglesias makes his debut as a sitcom lead in a show where he plays Gabe Iglesias, superstar high school history teacher. Mr. Iglesias teaches history at his alma mater, Woodrow Wilson High (which is also where Iglesias went to high school IRL!), and he takes a comedic but effective approach to education. But when Mr. Iglesias learns that a bunch of his students, including his best-performing students, are going to be counseled out for various reasons, he volunteers to teach them in summer school and get them back on track.

What is counseled out? Is it real?

Counseling out is very real; you can read more about it in this New York Times article from 2011. It usually happens in private schools, where underperforming students are expelled. Mr. Iglesias is set at a public high school, and they choose to counsel out several “underperforming” students in order to get their grades and attendance averages up in order to get more funding.
