‘The Today Show’ Completely Erased Matt Lauer From Its Anniversary Celebration

The Today Show celebrated a major milestone this morning, but they raised some eyebrows by erasing Matt Lauer from the show’s history. The popular morning news show aired a five and a half minute long retrospective on the show’s history since moving to its current studio, highlighting major moments, bloopers, and hosts. However, fans watching noticed that disgraced anchor Matt Lauer was completely cut out.

The Today Show first broadcast live from Studio 1A in Rockefeller Center all the way back in 1994. Since then, the show has been committed to a friendly and interactive set up that makes viewers feel like they’re part of The Today Show. Because the show’s anchors and correspondents project a feeling that they’re close with the viewers, it made Matt Lauer’s fall from grace all the more horrifying.

In November 2017, it was revealed that Matt Lauer had a history of horrifying sexual misconduct at NBC, including designing his office so he could lock fellow employees inside with him. Lauer was immediately dismissed from the show, and replaced by Hoda Kotb, but the shadow of his misdeeds still looms over the show’s history. After all, he was The Today Show‘s anchor for 20 years. That’s 80% of the time Today was celebrating this morning, and yet, Lauer and his downfall didn’t even merit a mention.

Viewers took to Twitter to express their very mixed thoughts.

Of course, he’s not the only anchor conspicuously missing from the montage. Ann Curry, whom Lauer infamously pulled strings to fire, was also nowhere to be seen.
