Last night on the 500th episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, the HBO host dedicated his “New Rule” segment of the show to suggesting that the feckless Democrats have only one “sure-thing winner” to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming 2020 Presidential election: and that’s Oprah Winfrey.
“I am telling you, at this particular moment in history and in this particular election year, she is the only candidate who is a sure-thing winner for the Democrats,” Maher declared, joking that there’s “No pressure.”
Maher made it quite clear that his message was not a call for Winfrey to enter the race but rather to provide a solution for the Democratic Party. Maher insisted that Winfrey “checks all the boxes” due to her media position and celebrity status as well as her stature with women and African Americans.
While Maher explained that he isn’t thrilled with the celebrity nature of American politics today, he conceded.
“There’s no underestimating the power of celebrity in modern American politics…it’s not the way it’s supposed to be be, its not the way I’d like it to be but we officially live in a post-literate, post-truth, star-f—er society and this is going to be the dirtiest campaign ever.”
Maher suggested that the typical Trump supporter, who may wavering at this point, could potentially give Winfrey his vote. “If he’s fed up with Trump, I know he could vote for Oprah. Because he knows that if he doesn’t his wife will never blow him again.”
As for the African American vote, Maher claimed that Winfrey “will make black polls rise more than a Kardashian.”
The HBO host also touched on some of the Dems’ current frontrunners, including former vice president Joe Biden. While he stated that he likes Joe, he explained that when young people view the 72-year-old as a potential candidate it’s like “a typewriter is running for president.” He joked that Biden is so old that he could one day be seen driving a car through a farmer’s market.
