Where’s Matthew Modine’s Dr. Brenner? And 5 Other Characters ‘Stranger Things’ Could Bring Back

Stranger Things Season 3 promises to be the blockbuster event of the summer. All eight episodes of Stranger Things Season 3 are set to debut on Netflix on July 4, 2019, turning Independence Day into the biggest binge holiday of the year.

Early trailers have been not only hyping the return of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Hopper (David Harbour), and all their Hawkins allies, but brand new horrors and a few new friends. We’re going to see a Starcourt Mall come to Hawkins, a fireworks-lit town fair, and a whole lot more. But what about the storylines that haven’t been resolved from the first two seasons of Stranger Things?

Over the years, the Duffer Brothers have introduced a huge cast of characters to their charming take on ’80s genre storytelling, and a few them are AWOL. We know that fan favorites like Bob Newby (Sean Astin) and Barb (Shannon Purser) are gone for good, but what about characters like the shifty Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine)? Sure, we think he died, but eagle-eyed fans have spotted clues that he survived the Demogorgon’s attack. What are Eleven’s mom and aunt, the Ives sisters, up to? And what about Eleven’s spiritual sister, Kali (Linnea Berthelsen)?

Here are five supporting storylines that Stranger Things could still pick up in Season 3 and beyond…

Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine)

What Was Dr. Brenner’s Deal?: Dr. Brenner was the scientist in charge of MKUltra and Hawkins Laboratory. He conducted unethical tests on subjects and essentially raised Eleven to be a weapon. His experiments opened up a gate to the Upside Down in Hawkins, Indiana, bringing the Demogorgon into our existence. Eleven considers her as her father at first – though an abusive one at that.
When Did We Last See Dr. Brenner?: He was last seen being attacked by the Demogorgon, and though he has been presumed dead, there are rumors he survived. So, I guess that means he might come back.

Dr. Sam Owens (Paul Reiser)

What Was Dr. Owens’s Deal?: Dr. Owens was basically the guy assigned to clean up the mess that Dr. Brenner left at Hawkins Laboratory. Much kinder than Brenner, Owens seems to have a genuine concern in Will’s condition and protecting the people of Hawkins. This is evidenced by how he stays to help our heroes fight. He almost is killed by Demodogs, but manages to survive.
When Did We Last See Dr. Owens?: After Owens survived the events of Stranger Things 2, he helped Hopper legally adopt Eleven, making her official name “Jane Hopper.”

Becky Ives and Terry Ives (Amy Seimetz and Aimee Mullins)

What Were the Ives Sisters’ Deal?: Teresa “Terry” Ives was Eleven’s mother. She volunteered for MKUltra, not knowing she was pregnant, which meant that Eleven was subjected to psychedelics in the womb. After Terry gave birth to daughter Jane, Dr. Brenner kidnapped the child. Years later, Terry broke into the Hawkins Lab and tried to save Jane, but she was instead captured and given shock therapy that left her in a vegetable-like state.

Becky Ives is Terry’s sister and current caregiver. She is the one (pictured) who has to speak to Hopper, Joyce, and later Eleven, on her sister’s behalf.
When Did We Last See the Ives Sisters?: In Season 2, Eleven runs away from Hopper to meet her birth mother. After Eleven communicates with Terry, Becky helps her identify another Hawkins test subject using Terry’s old files. However, Eleven overhears Becky calling the Hawkins Police, and runs away from the house.

Kali Prasad/Eight (Linnea Berthelsen)

What Was Kali’s Deal?: Kali had the ability to project illusions and had some measure of clairvoyance. Using these talents, she escaped the lab and took up with a group of rebel friends. Their mission? To track down her tormentors and bring them to justice. Kali wants Eleven to lean into her aggression to unleash her powers.
When Did We Last See Kali?: Driving away from gunfire with her gang of misfits, calling for Jane to join them. Instead, Eleven chose to return to Hawkins to save her friends.

Murray Bauman (Brett Gelman)

What Was Murray Bauman’s Deal?: Murray Bauman was an eccentric private investigator whom Barb’s family hired to track her down. Fired as a reporter, Murray had trouble relating to people and was obsessed with conspiracy theories. However, he was also smart, witty, and usually on to something.
When Did We Last See Murray?: Canonically, the last we saw of him was triumphantly waving goodbye to the military at the Hawkins lab. The good news? Murray is in full view in at least one Stranger Things 3 trailer. Fingers crossed he brings more of his zany energy to the new season.
