When Will ‘The Spanish Princess’ Season 2 Come to Starz?

Starz’s The Spanish Princess was one of the frothiest delights of the spring TV season. Seducing us with its soapy drama and swoon-worthy romances, the series made for a decadent escape and addictive ride.

Season 1 of The Spanish Princess ends with an emotional cliffhanger that pits young lovers Henry VIII (Ruairi O’Connor) and Catherine of Aragon (Charlotte Hope) against each other just as they are about to wed. History fans will know that their marriage is doomed, and that Henry is destined to go through six wives, but fans of The Spanish Princess still felt the devastation. Harry and Catherine’s star-crossed romance was one of the show’s main hooks, along with Lina and Oviedo’s relationship, Rosa’s journey, and oodles of fabulous gowns.

The good news is Henry and Catherine’s story will continue. Starz has already ordered Season 2. The bad news is we might have to wait a while for it…

When Will The Spanish Princess Season 2 Come Out?

Starz has confirmed that The Spanish Princess Season 2 will premiere some time in 2020. During a recent interview, Decider asked showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham if we could expect The Spanish Princess Part 2 in summer 2020.

“We don’t know!” Graham said. “We film [in] September. And we will be delivering our show to Starz next year. Yeah, I’d love it to be on. In theory it can be on this time next year. But we don’t know that yet. It’s out of our hands.”

So maybe next summer, but definitely next year.

What Can We Expect in The Spanish Princess Season 2?

The Spanish Princess Season 2 will follow newlyweds King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Graham and Frost both described these years as Henry and Catherine’s “rockstar” years. Nevertheless Henry and Catherine will struggle to produce an heir, which infamously spelled doom for their marriage.

Elsewhere, Graham says we’ll follow Meg Tudor (Georgie Henley) in the Scottish court and Mary Tudor (who will be recast) after she’s married to the King of France. While neither Graham nor Frost would confirm this, it stands to reason the show will cover Henry VIII’s attempt to wage war in France, while Catherine of Aragon commands British troops against the invading Scots. Both events took place early in their marriage (and I’ve seen historians like Dan Jones and Suzannah Lipscomb point to Catherine’s success versus Henry’s failure in these campaigns as an additional stress on their relationship). Frost did confirm that we’ll see more Lina and Oviedo in Season 2, and that we may see more of Rosa.
