Meghan McCain and Whoopi Goldberg Get Into Shouting Match Over Iran’s Gay Rights Stance

There must be something in those coffee cups on The View this week. On Wednesday morning, one day after things got heated during a discussion about immigration “torture facilities,” the women of The View got into yet another screaming match during a discussion about Iran’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights. After Whoopi Goldberg suggested that the United States may be heading towards Iran’s restrictive gay rights laws, Meghan McCain blew up and said that “there’s a huge difference” between the U.S. and Iran. “It’s going to make my head explode!” yelled McCain as the women talked over each other.

After discussing the Iranian president’s recent diss of Donald Trump — Hassan Rouhani said that Trump is “suffering mental disability” — the conversation shifted towards Iran’s hostility towards its LGBTQ+ citizens. “When you are the leader of a country that throws gay people off of roofs for being gay and women in the street for wearing tank tops, how dare you judge what we do in our country,” said McCain of Iranian leadership. The audience applauded, but Goldberg was quick to remind them, and McCain, that we shouldn’t “forget what is happening to gay people in this country.”

“But they’re not being killed,” said McCain, adding that, “it’s not illegal to be gay” in the United States. “Not yet!” fired back Goldberg. “You think this is not something that’s being thrown around?”

“I’ve never heard that it’s being thrown around to be illegal to be gay in the United States of America,” countered McCain. “Well, then you should read some more of the stuff that is in the newspapers so you see what people are doing!” said Goldberg. Hostin, who had previously agreed with McCain that Rouhani’s Trump comments were “inappropriate,” shifted sides and brought up the transgender military ban, which set off the entire table.

After the shouting subsided, McCain tried to explain herself. “I get exhausted when the hyperbole becomes, in the media in general, ‘We’re no better than Iran,'” she said. “There is a huge difference between — if you are gay in Iran, you’ll be thrown off the side of a building!” When Behar tried to interrupt, McCain shut her down. “If you don’t think there’s a difference between Iran and the United States of America, then we shouldn’t be having a conversation, because it’s going to make my head explode!” she said. Another screaming match ensued, but Goldberg sent the show to commercial before it could escalate.

The View didn’t share the video of McCain and Goldberg’s fight, but you can watch the aftermath in the clip above.
