Samantha Bee Roasts “Dum-Dum” Meghan McCain for Doubting E. Jean Carroll Rape Allegations

Samantha Bee has no time for those dismissing E. Jean Carroll’s rape allegations against President Donald Trump. On Wednesday night, the Full Frontal host devoted a full segment to the media’s handling of the allegations (Trump has denied Carroll’s claims), but it was The View‘s Meghan McCain who received the brunt of Bee’s outrage. Bee called out “noted TV dum-dum” McCain for casting doubt on Carroll’s story, and she joked that “McCain’s take is so bad, Joy Behar literally had to wear sunglasses to hold back her eye lasers.” Added the Full Frontal host, “If you’re not going to hold Trump accountable, you are not a journalist.”

Rather than cover the Democratic debates on Wednesday night, Bee chose to sound off on Carroll’s rape allegations, which first came to light last Friday (Full Frontal airs every Wednesday, so this was Bee’s first chance to discuss the claim). “With a looming war with Iran to the ongoing humanitarian crisis at the border, it has been a week,” said Bee at the top of the show. “Somewhere in the middle of all that was the teensy bit of news that our president, who has admitted to sexual assault on tape, was accused for the 22nd time of sexual misconduct.” Bee paused to let that sink in. “22! If I had a dollar for every person Trump allegedly sexually harassed or assaulted, I would be doing better than any of his businesses,” she joked.

Bee lamented the fact that Carroll’s allegations are “still being treated as a small story,” particularly by major newspapers like the New York Times. But according to the Full Frontal host, the problem doesn’t exist solely in print. “Much of the TV coverage left something to be desired,” she said. “Noted TV dum-dum Meghan McCain took a much-needed break from being Judaism’s self-appointed spokesperson to say that maybe Carroll is lying.” She then played a clip from The View‘s Monday episode, during which McCain questioned the veracity of Carroll’s account.

“I’m going to say something on this show that is probably unpopular,” said McCain. “I have a problem — and I think of the Asia Argento story  — believe everyone all the time and not asking questions. In life in general, I don’t believe anything anybody tells me without asking questions.” She continued, “She’s accusing a lot of other very prominent, famous men of sexual assault, and I believe, of rape.”

“Wow, Meghan McCain’s take is so bad, Joy Behar literally had to wear sunglasses to hold back her eye lasers,” said Bee. “It’s not people who defend accused rapists who put something on the line; it’s the women who decide to speak up who, as Carroll puts it, receive death threats, are driven from their home, dismissed and dragged through the mud, only to see Trump turn it around, deny, threaten and attack them — which is exactly what he did again.”

Bee went on to say that she understands that “the media is tired of talking about how the president did sexual assault a bunch,” but it’s also important to hold him accountable, no matter how “accustomed” we are to hearing these allegations. “When you let him off with softball questions about where he’s going to build his library without once mentioning his many accusers, you are dropping the ball, Chuck Todd,” she said. “No one should ever sit down with President Predator without asking about these 22 women.”

“It matters. It will never stop mattering,” concluded Bee. “If you’re not going to hold Trump accountable, you are not a journalist. Go do Sunday morning segments about fucking lasagna. Otherwise, do your job, please.”
