The Stars of ‘Younger’ Are Also Obsessed With ‘Rupaul’s Drag Race’: “Guilty as Charged, Henny!”

Is there anything more comforting than a new season of Younger? Last night’s episode saw some big changes for our beloved characters: Josh and baby mama Claire’s official break-up; a new love interest for Maggie (hello, Nicole Ari Parker!); the further divide between Kelsey and boss Quinn; the birth of Charles’ and Zane’s new publishing company, Mercury. And let’s not get into the sexy true crime podcast Charles and Liza love to role-play!

Speaking of true crime, before the start of Season 6, we had some time with stars Nico Tortorella, Debi Mazar and Molly Bernard to further explore their streaming habits that range from their thoughts on The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story to RuPaul’s Drag Race. We also got into their own career accomplishments (thus far!) and found out about what they like to consume while binge-watching… and it’s not always food!

It’s clear that the Younger gang loves television and not just American shows or Netflix standards! Mazar loved watching Casa de las Flores and Vivir Sin Permiso but her real obsession is Shitsel, about which she gushed, “It’s about family life. It’s a drama, but has comedy in it, and it was brilliant.” Off the beaten Netflix path is Tortorella’s choice: Special, a show created, written and starring Ryan O’Connell, a gay man with cerebral palsy. “I watched the whole thing in two hours and thought it was incredible,” said Tortorella. He also joined Bernard in binge-watching The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. While admitting its artistic merit, Tortorella commented on the unfairness that “straight actors won Emmys for playing gay characters.” Bernard agreed and added that she worries about our culture “fetishizing murder SO much.”

The group identified the actors they would watch in anything (Mazar: “Pacino;” Tortorella: “Joaquin;” Bernard: “Huppert”) without much commentary (it is what it is). As for their “guilty pleasure” shows, Mazar deferred comment, saying, “I don’t have one. I have no guilt in anything I watch,” but Mazar. Tortorella and Bernard consider their obsession with RuPaul’s Drag Race as falling into that category. “Guilty as charged, henny,” exclaimed Tortorella, while Bernard further elaborated, “Some people like sports. I like RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

You think when asked about greatest on-screen accomplishments, Mazar would immediately say Goodfellas. Not so! She is most proud of Arde Madrid, explaining, “I spoke Spanish in it!” Tortorella looked beyond his on-screen work to a special segment he did on The View: “I did a field piece at The Center to celebrate non-binary and bisexual identity and spoke with a bunch of the youth. It was really, really special to me.” And as for Bernard, she recently played the young Shelly Pfefferman (Judith Light plays the older Shelly) in Transparent. “Not an easy job,” according to Bernard.

As for their favorite television-viewing treats, Mazar and Tortorella agreed that they prefer to smoke weed while binge-watching their favorite shows. “I’m not a snacker. I’m a smoker,” said Mazar simply. Bernard, on the other hand, is a snack enthusiast. “I like a huge chocolate candy bar. I try to avoid refined sugars, so I’ll do coconut sugar. I’ll eat a bar in a sitting,” she continued. “I also like these almond crackers, cause I’m also gluten free. I sound like an asshole. But I love these garlic almond crackers.” Ain’t no shame in your snack game, Molly!

It doesn’t matter if you snack or smoke while watching Younger. Either choice enhances the already pleasurable experience.
