‘Sharp Objects’ Star Patricia Clarkson Says Streaming Is “Good For Women”

Sharp Objects star Patricia Clarkson, who plays Adora Crellin in the hit HBO series, a role which has absolutely made her a viable contender for a best actress Emmy, praised streaming services for “lifting” women by providing standout roles in their original content at the Karlovy Vary film festival on Friday.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the festival – which is being held in the Czech Republic – will honor Clarkson with a Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema tonight. Speaking at the event, Clarkson said that streaming services has increased the number of significant roles for actresses.

“The current Netflix, HBO, Amazon and Warners streaming services are good for women,” said Clarkson. “They have single-handedly really lifted women — and women of over 40, 50 or 60. It has given them a vibrant, complex and fertile field in which they now work.”

Clarkson did, however, argue that we still need “many more women behind the camera.” The actress spoke to the media prior to presenting a screening of Isabel Coixet‘s 2014 film Learning to Drive (in which she stars with Ben Kingsley) inferring that we shouldn’t rule out gender quotas in film and television, despite talent being the key.

“There is a groundswell now — a deep and profound shift that is happening in Hollywood,” she stated. “I think now people are realizing that women can also make you money and we really look good — at all ages. Now producers, studio heads, they want to work with women.”

She added: “I think now it is a priority, whereas before it used to be the exception rather than the rule to many big, powerful men in Hollywood.”

The actress, who has previously won a Golden Globe as well as two Emmys, chose not to feed in to questions about a potential Emmy win this year for her role in Sharp Objects, however, she said if she did win one for her role in the HBO series, “it would mean so very much.”
