Meghan McCain Blasts Republicans’ “Cowardly” Silence on Trump Tweets: “It’s Deeply Racist”

It’s not every day that Meghan McCain gives her View co-hosts a blank check to criticize Republican lawmakers, but on Monday morning, she did just that. During a discussion about President Trump’s “deeply xenophobic and racist” Twitter rant about the Democratic “Squad,” McCain slammed her fellow conservatives for staying silent on the issue, or in the case of Lindsey Graham, doubling down on the president’s comments. After ripping “the cowardice” of GOP leadership, the conservative co-host addressed her party directly. “It can’t just be me and Geraldo,” said McCain. “It is very petrifying that there is not one sitting member of Congress that will come out against this on my side.”

As soon as moderator Whoopi Goldberg introduced the Hot Topic, it was clear that things were going to get heated. The longtime moderator warned Trump that his tweets were “very dangerous,” particularly as he told “The Squad” — a group consisting of Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Ayanna Pressley — to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” Said Goldberg, “You don’t want to be telling people to go back to their country, because if they’ve got to go, we’re going too. If you’re not Native American, you don’t belong here either.” She continued, “The rest of us, whether we got here on top of the boat or beneath the boat, we all got here from somewhere else. Don’t do this.”

Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin agreed with Goldberg, but it was McCain’s sentiment that was the most surprising. “It’s deeply xenophobic and racist,” she said right out of the gate. McCain added that while it’s fine to make “political criticisms” of “The Squad,” this was nothing more than an “old racist dogwhistle.” Lamented the conservative co-host, “This is what people think all conservatives are now, and we are not.”

“Go at it, ladies. Have a free for all,” continued McCain, turning to her co-hosts. “The cowardice I’m seeing — Republicans not speaking out and saying it today is embarrassing … It’s deeply cowardly.”

After a discussion about Graham’s favorability numbers, McCain addressed her fellow conservatives directly. “It can’t just be me and Geraldo [Rivera],” she said. “Somebody else has to come out against this. I’m serious. It is very petrifying that there is not one sitting member of Congress that will come out against this on my side.” Continued McCain, “It’s humiliating for me on TV right now. Someone has to say something other than me and Geraldo.”
