Bruce Springsteen Could Finally Get His EGOT with ‘Springsteen on Broadway’ Emmy Nomination

Will Bruce Springsteen be the next artist inducted into EGOT fame? On Tuesday, Netflix special Springsteen on Broadway was nominated for an Emmy award for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), the singer’s third overall Emmy nod. According to The Hollywood Reporter, if Springsteen wins, he’ll join Whoopi Goldberg, Barbra Streisand, John Legend, and more Hollywood heavyweights in the elite Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar, and Tony Award winners circle.

Springsteen’s latest Emmy contender comes courtesy of Netflix, which turned his one-man concert residency — it ran from October 2017 to December 2018 — into a Netflix special, Springsteen on Broadway. Netflix submitted the concert film under the pre-recorded variety special category, and on Tuesday, the Boss’ efforts were rewarded with an Emmy nomination. However, before he can claim EGOT glory, he has to face some formidable competition: Beyonce’s HomecomingHannah Gadsby: NannetteCarpool Karaoke‘s Paul McCartney episode, and Wanda Sykes: Not Normal were also nominated for the Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) award.

With 20 wins, the singer has no shortage of Grammy Awards to help fill out the EGOT. Additionally, Springsteen has an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the 1994 film Streets of Philadelphia, and he won an honorary Tony Award in 2018. However, the Emmy has eluded Springsteen for many years. The Springsteen on Broadway nod is his third overall: his first Emmy nomination came in 2001, for Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band (Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Special), while his second came in 2009 after his performance at the Super Bowl XLIII Halftime Show (Outstanding Special Class — Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Programs).

THR reports that only 15 people have ever collected an EGOT — a list that includes Legend, Audrey Hepburn, Andrew Lloyd Weber, and more iconic singers, actors, producers, and writers. If Springsteen wins at the 2019 Emmy Awards, he will join non-competitive EGOT winners (due to the honorary nature of his Tony) like Barbra Streisand, Liza Minelli, and Quincy Jones. But at that point, who cares? An EGOT is a damn EGOT.

The 71st Emmy Awards air Sunday, September 22 on Fox. See the full list of nominees here.
