Emmy Awards Once Again Hit Ratings Low
Welcome to 2019 Emmy Awards nomination day! This morning, The Good Place star D’Arcy Carden and comedian Ken Jeong will announce the nominees for the 71st Emmy Awards, and there are sure to be a few surprises. Game of Thrones‘ disappointing final season threw a wrench in what many thought was a predictable race, and now, a few dark horses have a chance to sit atop the Iron Throne that is the 2019 Emmys. Who will reign supreme?
This year could be a pivotal one for the Emmys: will they stick to their tried and trues (looking at you, Veep and Game of Thrones) or honor new favorites like Pose, Russian Doll, and Succession? On the drama side, the absence of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Crown, and Stranger Things creates some opportunities for shows that don’t take place in Westeros, including the excellent Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul and Netflix’s Ozark. With Veep back in the picture, the 2019 comedy race comes down to Julia Louis-Dreyfus vs. Rachel Brosnahan in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Will JLD take home her eighth Best Actress in a Comedy statue, or will Brosnahan’s charming Midge Maisel win for the second year in a row?
The limited series race should also prove interesting. Between Chernobyl (HBO), When They See Us (Netflix), Fosse/Verdon (FX), Escape at Dannemora (Showtime), and more, practically every major network or streaming platform has a serious contender this year. It will be difficult to narrow the options down to just five nominees, but expect to see many different corners of the streaming world represented.
The 71st Emmy Awards air Sunday, September 22 on Fox. Best of luck, Emmy hopefuls!
