Meghan McCain Warns of “Dystopian” Trump Rally: “We Should Be Worried About Violence”

The View is sounding off on President Trump‘s North Carolina rally. On Thursday morning, the women of the ABC talk show were in agreement about the “terrifying” event, which made news after audience members began chanting “send her back” about Rep. Ilhan Omar, an American citizen. Meghan McCain was quick to slam the “dystopian” Trump rally, saying, “I didn’t think this was something that I would see in my country.” McCain went on to say that while she’s been “a vocal critic” of Omar, she’s concerned that Trump’s remarks, as well as the angry crowd, is putting the congresswoman and the other members of “The Squad” in danger. “We should be worried about violence being directed towards them,” said the conservative co-host.

After moderator Whoopi Goldberg introduced the Hot Topic, she noted that the “send her back” chant “takes this to a new level.” Sunny Hostin agreed, saying, “It terrified me. I never thought that I would hear those words from the president of the United States of America.” McCain, a vocal critic of the president, described the chant as “really dystopian” before launching into a passionate monologue about the dangers of Trump’s rhetoric.

“Everyone at this table … knows that I’ve been one of Ilhan Omar’s most vocal critics on her policy regarding Israel, regarding some of her comments that I, and many others, interpreted as anti-semitic,” said McCain. “But the problem right now is, you’re taking away my agency to criticize her policy because you’re making this so much about race, xenophobia, racism. I think any time you’re hitting in a territory where you’re telling any American citizen who is of a different color than you are to ‘send them back’ — I, too, didn’t think this was something that I would see in my country, especially when we’re going into 2020.”

McCain went on to say that while Republicans “may be in power,” staying silent on things like this will ultimately spell disaster for the party. “It’s my generation that’s going to answer for this,” she said. “Try selling conservatism to a younger generation when all they see is this kind of crap on TV.”

Additionally, argued McCain, Trump is putting the personal safety of Omar and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley at risk. “We should be worried about violence being directed towards them,” added McCain. Goldberg agreed, saying, “That does involve people — women in particular — who critique this.” She continued, “[Trump] doesn’t care or doesn’t acknowledge the fact that what he is doing is possibly inviting violence towards these women and women who are saying, ‘This is wrong, I don’t like this.'”
